Landscape and Getting There

Bujanda lies at the confluence of the Izkiz River and the Barranco de la Parra. Waterways therefore shape the geographical setting of the village. A broader connection with nature is the Izki Natural Park: designated in 1998, it covers 9,143 hectares and features great landscape diversity. You can reach Bujanda from the northern part of the natural park via the A-132 road (Vitoria–Estella). Check road conditions before setting out.

Architecture and Religious Heritage

The village’s appearance includes houses with coats of arms on their façades, including those of the Sagasti and Arrietas y Castillos families. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary offers another way to explore Bujanda’s history. Its portal dates from the 13th century and has a pointed, double arch. The Baroque tower, by contrast, was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The same church thus reveals two distinct periods and styles of construction: the medieval portal and the later tower.

The church is also connected with a religious tradition: the incorrupt body of San Fausto Labrador, regarded as the patron saint of fertility, rests there. The coats of arms on the façades, the architecture and the saint’s religious significance are distinct themes that shape the village’s cultural identity. Those particularly interested in architectural styles can compare two specific periods through the pointed portal and the Baroque tower.

Nature Trails and Activities

The trails around Bujanda showcase different landscapes. The Senda Bujanda follows the river between the limestone cliffs of La Muela and Soila. Another trail forms a circular route through stands of centuries-old holm oaks. The routes therefore differ both in their layout and in the landscapes described: one features a river and limestone cliffs, the other ancient oaks. Trail conditions and signage on the circular route may change; check them before setting out.
