Es Mercadal in Menorca
Accommodation in Es Mercadal
When looking for a hotel in Es Mercadal, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: Menorca's highest mountain, historic buildings, cycling and walking routes, or the northern coast. There are also archaeological remains and a seasonal market. The different places and activities offer practical starting points for planning your trip.
Monte Toro: Island Views and History
Monte Toro is Menorca's highest mountain. From there, you can see almost the entire island. The history of the Santuario Monte Toro sanctuary and monastery also goes back a long way: their medieval origins are documented as far back as 1291, and both were rebuilt in 1670. At Monte Toro, landscape and religious history meet. Another testament to the island's history is the medieval Torre de El Toro. It was remodelled and extended to become part of Menorca's coastal watchtower network.
Heritage and Nature on the Northern Coast
The Centre d'interpretació del Cap de Cavalleria is located on the grounds of Menorca's oldest lighthouse, built in 1856. The centre hosts exhibitions on the history, archaeology, and natural and cultural heritage of the northern coast. A restored extension of the lighthouse serves as an educational space covering geology, climate, the marine reserve, fishing and livestock farming. The exhibitions may change.
Playa Cavalleria lies between the headlands of Es Vernís and Ferragut and is part of the marine reserve in northern Menorca. It can be reached from Es Mercadal via the Camí de Tramuntana. From the car park, a footpath of around 400 metres and some steps lead to the beach. Allow for the walk when planning your visit, and check access and parking conditions before setting off. A walking trail also leads from Playa Cavalleria to a viewpoint with panoramic views.
Camí d'en Kane: Historic Road and Cycling Route
The Camí d'en Kane connects Es Mercadal and Alaior via a historic country road. During British rule in the 18th century, it was Menorca's main route across the island. Dry-stone walls line the road as it passes through the Menorcan countryside.
Specific details are available for the cycling route between Es Mercadal and Alaior: it is just over seven kilometres long, mostly flat and paved, and takes no more than around two hours for the round trip. These details refer to the cycling route; check conditions along the route before setting off. The Camí d'en Kane's historic role and its present-day use for cycling offer two different perspectives on the same connection.
Caves, Archaeology and Places in the Municipality
The excursion to Cova dels Coloms follows the Barranc de Binigaus from the centre of Es Mercadal towards Platja de Sant Tomàs. The cave can be visited year-round; check access conditions before your trip. The Roman city of Sanisera is an archaeological site in the municipality of Es Mercadal.
The Torre de Sanitja stands at the entrance to Sanitja's natural harbour. The English built the defensive tower during their second period of rule over the island, from 1798 to 1802. Access may be restricted; check access arrangements before visiting.
Seasonal Market and Fornells
From June to September, Es Mercadal's agro-food and handicraft night market takes place every Thursday evening. The offerings include artisan cheese, homemade bread, wines and local baked goods, as well as basketry, woodwork and rustic ceramics. The seasonal selection may change. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the dates before you arrive.
Fornells is part of the municipality of Es Mercadal and has a sheltered harbour for pleasure boats and fishing vessels. Along the waterfront, you can look for an opportunity to try Caldereta de Langosta; the dining options may change. Together with the heritage sites, the island views from Monte Toro and the different routes, this gives you a range of travel themes to help guide your search for a hotel in Es Mercadal.
