Igriés: Heritage and Pinar de Igriés
Accommodation in Igriés
Igriés combines Romanesque heritage with the Pinar de Igriés and a hilltop setting that reveals the landscape contrasts of the comarca. Several themes can guide your travel planning: religious buildings, shared trails, and recurring festival dates. If you are looking for a hotel in Igriés, architectural history, a stay timed to a local event, or an interest in the cross-country course may shape your reason for travelling. Churches, the pine forest, and the hilltop appeal to different interests.
Religious buildings and their dates
The Ermita de San Juan in Igriés is a Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century. The Cruz de San Juan stands in the upper part of the village, in front of the façade of the Ermita and the cemetery. The parish church of Igriés is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza; its present-day building dates from 1950. The two dates refer to different religious buildings: the 12th century refers to the Romanesque chapel, while 1950 refers to the present-day parish church building. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing what interests you: the chapel is notable for its Romanesque style and construction date, while the parish church is notable for its dedication and the year its present-day building was constructed.
Cross-country and shared trails
The Pinar de Igriés is home to an official cross-country course, considered the first of its kind in Aragón. The Circuito XC is signposted from Igriés; its loop begins about 750 metres from the village. The loop can be combined with other marked downhill trails in the pine forest. This means a cross-country route and additional marked downhill trails are available as different options that can be combined. The trails in the pine forest are shared by hikers, horse riders, and cyclists. If you are planning a route there, bear in mind that several types of users share the same trails. As trail signs may change, check them before setting out.
Festivals throughout the year
Local dates also offer specific guidance for planning your trip. On 20 January, Igriés holds celebrations in honour of San Sebastián and San Fabián. Two more events take place on different Saturdays in May: the pilgrimage in honour of the Virgen de Cillas takes place on the first Saturday; celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Olivar take place on the second Saturday. The May events differ both in their place in the calendar and in whom they honour. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, make sure you choose the right Saturday. Checking the dates before planning will help you tailor your stay to the event you want to attend.
Hilltop setting and views
Igriés is located on a hill. From its heights, you can enjoy views of the landscape contrasts of the comarca. This offers a different perspective from exploring the individual religious buildings or the trails in the pine forest: here, the comarca’s landscape takes centre stage. You can therefore choose between different interests when deciding what to plan your trip around—architectural history, shared trails, local festivals, or the view from the hilltop.
