Estadilla: Walking Routes, Rock Art and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Estadilla
When planning a hotel stay in Estadilla, you can choose your destination based on whether local history, rock art, nature watching or trails along the water are your main interests. The townscape brings together the Fuente de los Doce Caños and the Plaza Mayor with buildings from different historical periods; walking routes, a mountain with far-reaching views and protected natural areas round out the picture. These themes give you concrete starting points for planning your trip, without combining the different routes and sights into a single excursion.
Local History and Rock Art
The Fuente de los Doce Caños was built in 1735. Its twelve outlets are arranged in three groups of four and release water through the mouths of lion heads. Arcades line the Plaza Mayor, where the town hall is also located. It is an example of the Renaissance style of an Aragonese palace from the 16th century. The parish church of Estadilla is Gothic in style and stands on the site of a former castle, whose wall remains can still be seen today.
The Santuario de la Carrodilla also brings together several building phases: judging by the surviving architectural features, the present-day sanctuary was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. It consists of a nave with eight chapels added later. Two different designations apply to the rock art sites: Forau del Cocho, Cueva de La Carrodilla, is listed in the Aragonese register of caves and rock shelters with rock art classified as Assets of Cultural Interest. The Abrigo del Engardaixo rock shelter is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.
Landscape and Views
At 1,108 metres, Pico Buñero offers views of the Cinca and Ésera valleys, the Pyrenean peaks of Ribagorza and Sobrarbe, the Sierra de Guara and the Somontano. The described panorama thus spans various valleys and mountain landscapes as far as the Somontano. Nature also has a place of its own: the municipality of Estadilla, covering an area of 53.53 hectares, is part of the protected Site of Community Importance LIC RĂos Cinca y Alcanadre. The Sierra de la Carrodilla lies at the foot of the Pre-Pyrenees and is notable for its diverse vegetation, wildlife and natural landscapes.
Walking Routes and Hiking Trails
The Ruta Ornitológica starts at the Fuente de los Doce Caños and follows a circular route through various paths and landscapes. It passes through fruit-growing and market-gardening areas, where 30 nest boxes for different species have been installed and which are used for birdwatching. If you are interested in this subject, the route connects the trail with designated observation areas.
The Ruta del Agua, by contrast, focuses on the watercourse. This easy circular route passes through the huertas (market gardens) of Estadilla and follows the water to the former Baños de Estadilla. Along the way, it runs beside old irrigation channels and passes small waterfalls and cascades. The difference between the two circuits is clear: the Ruta Ornitológica passes through areas with nest boxes, while the Ruta del Agua brings the channels and water features into focus. The long-distance trails GR 18 and GR 45 also pass through Estadilla.
