Camporrélls’s cultural history includes the municipal Pozo de Hielo ice house, Castillo de Miravet, a grain mill and the Iglesia de San Pedro. It also includes an archaeological site on Montpedro and local traditions with their own historical connections. If you are looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you decide whether Camporrélls suits your travel interests.

Cultural history through buildings and images

The Pozo de Hielo is a municipal ice house built of rubble stone bonded with mortar. The structure is cylindrical; its tunnel-shaped entrance opens into the shaft halfway up. The materials, shape and entrance give the ice house a distinctive architectural character.

Under the Second Additional Provision of Law 3/1999 of 10 March, Castillo de Miravet in Camporrells is included in the register of castles considered Cultural Assets of Cultural Interest (Bienes de Interés Cultural). The Manuel-Salazar Mill, known as the Molí d'Abaix, offers a different perspective on history: it is a grain mill that was used between the 15th and 20th centuries. The legal classification of a castle and the former function of a mill thus represent different aspects of cultural heritage.

The pendentives of the Iglesia de San Pedro feature wall paintings depicting Augustine, Ambrose, Gregory and Jerome. The names of the saints depicted are given in Catalan. Outside the town centre, on Montpedro hill, there is an archaeological site where various remains from the Iberian period have been found. Religious art and archaeological finds thus provide different ways of exploring the history of the area.

Traditions and community customs

The Ball dels Totxets is a tradition that was revived in the 1980s and is still practised in Camporrells. The Plantada del mai follows a distinctive sequence: men carry the trimmed poplar on their shoulders in a procession through the village to the church square.

To conclude the Plantada del mai, pork belly, sausages and chorizo are grilled together locally, accompanied by wine. The procession and meal are thus part of a custom that involves both a specific route through the village and a communal barbecue. This sets the tradition apart from the buildings and historical depictions, which can be understood through their architectural, legal or visual features.

A cycling option to consider when planning

Cycling is another option to consider when planning your trip: the first section of the PR-HU 116 can be ridden by bicycle. This applies to this section of the route. Check the current conditions before cycling to ensure your plans suit the situation at the time.
