If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Sahún, local events, historic sites and hiking trails can offer different points of focus. The traditions give the year specific dates; music and environmental days provide further seasonal occasions. With its church, historic customs and trails through the different villages, you can plan a stay focused on culture or hiking.

Traditions and Seasonal Events

Les Falles are lit in Sahún every year on the evening of June 23. The municipality describes the custom as part of its cultural heritage; in 2016, it was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The local tradition also includes the “pela del albá”: birch bark is stripped off, then dried and pressed in June.

During the patron saint festivities, the Ball del Sombrers dance takes place every year on September 8 in front of the Santuario de Guayente. If you are planning a stay around a particular festival date, it is a good idea to check the event dates for the year of your trip. This lets you plan your trip around a specific custom without conflating the dates of the different traditions.

Music is another seasonal highlight: The classical music festival “Músicas en la cima,” organised by the municipality of Sahún, takes place every summer and has been held since 1994 in the churches of Eriste, Sahún, Eresué and Guayente, as well as in nearby outdoor spaces. Since 2020, Sahún has also hosted the ERESER environmental days. They include talks and outdoor activities exploring the relationship between human impacts and high-mountain ecosystems. The themes are quite distinct: classical music is at the heart of one, while the other focuses on people and the high mountains.

Church, Visual Arts and Local History

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guayente is a historic complex on a steep rocky slope. It comprises a church, a defensive tower, an entrance portal and a courtyard. The church dates back to the 16th century and was extensively remodelled in the 18th century. Those interested in its architectural history can distinguish between these two periods, rather than attributing the present-day complex to a single period of construction.

The imagery offers another perspective on the church: it houses a Renaissance altarpiece with ten polychrome wooden reliefs. The reliefs depict episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The architecture and furnishings therefore highlight different historical periods—from the later extensive remodelling of the church building to the Renaissance altarpiece.

The Ruta de las Tradiciones passes through the three villages in the municipality of Sahún: Eriste, Eresué and Sahún. It focuses on local customs and traditions, as well as crafts that were practised in the past. To help you find your way around the municipality, the family guide includes mountain biking, hiking and running routes, as well as places of interest. It also points out monuments, bridges, waterfalls, hermitages and various types of tree vegetation. The route and the guide have different focuses: the Ruta de las Tradiciones explores local heritage, while the guide covers several types of routes and places of interest.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The trails described in and around Sahún offer different route profiles and need not be combined into a single route. Some quieter circular walks start and end in Sahún; there are also fast, more challenging ascents. So when choosing a particular hike, the specific route is more informative than a general description of the available trails.

The S-6 Sahún–Ibones de Barbarisa hiking trail climbs near the Barranco Surri to the Cabaña d’Es Prats mountain hut. The Villanova–Sahún–Sesué circular route follows a different course: after the pass, it descends to Sahún on an easy path through the Barranco Surri. This comparison can help you choose the type of route you prefer: one description mentions a climb to a hut, the other a descent to Sahún. Both mention the Barranco Surri, but they remain separate routes.

If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activities when planning your trip, you can consider the local traditions, the architecture of Guayente and the different route descriptions as separate sources of inspiration. For a stay focused more on events, the recurring festival and summer dates are the obvious basis for planning.
