Discover San José De La Rinconada
Accommodation in San José De La Rinconada
San José De La Rinconada offers a range of themes for a stay: archaeological history, industrial heritage and green spaces. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether archaeological finds, the industrial past, local traditions or walking paths through green spaces suit your interests. The following themes differ significantly in period and character.
Archaeology and early history
Cerro Macareno is a key archaeological site and is listed as an archaeological zone with the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural. The continuous sequence of human settlement spans from the 8th to the 1st century BC. This period gives the area a historical focus that clearly predates its later industrial history. From the two hills into which Cerro Macareno is divided, you can see an agricultural Vega landscape as well as an urban area with residential, industrial and service zones. The landscape adds a sense of place to the settlement chronology.
Collections on early history
The museum collections also reach far back in time. They include Palaeolithic tools associated with Homo heidelbergensis and Homo neandertalensis. The fossil collection includes Elephas antiquus, a prehistoric elephant species that lived in La Rinconada more than 100,000 years ago. The collections therefore focus on different subjects: human tool culture on the one hand and a prehistoric animal species on the other.
Industrial heritage in San José
A much more recent chapter is associated with the Torre del Cáñamo. The chimney is 64.20 metres tall and dates from the first third of the 20th century. It is part of the industrial heritage of the municipality of La Rinconada and is associated with the sugar industry in the San José district. The Torre del Cáñamo was fully restored in 2020 and once again displays its original appearance. In contrast to Cerro Macareno, the focus here is on industrial history rather than early settlement.
Green spaces and parks
The green spaces serve a range of purposes. Dehesa Boyal Park is the main green space in the San José area. It covers 40,000 m² and is located in the Cánamo area. It has walking paths as well as open spaces for concerts, cultural activities and other events.
Santa Cruz Park covers 4.5 hectares and is located on the site of the former San José fairground. The opening announcement dated 29 July 2024 listed playgrounds, calisthenics facilities, multi-purpose sports courts and paths intended to connect leisure and sports areas. If you want to plan a visit to any of these facilities, check the latest information beforehand.
Patron saint festivities in March
The festivities in honour of Saint Joseph are celebrated around 19 March. On 11 March 2026, a work announcing these festivities was presented at the San José parish. This date provides a specific cultural reference point for planning your trip.
