Discover El Ronquillo
Accommodation in El Ronquillo
El Ronquillo lies between the Rivera de Huelva and the Rivera de Cala in the foothills of the Sierra Morena. El Ronquillo combines hiking trails and nature with architectural history, exhibitions and seasonal cuisine. For excursions, you can choose between a linear hiking trail, a short circular route and the Vía Verde along the former railway line.
Hiking trails and nature
The SL-A 254 Las Cañadas is a linear hiking trail with a low level of difficulty. It is 2.1 kilometres each way and can be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The trail begins in the town and leads into a dehesa landscape with several streams, which may be dry depending on the season. The 2.1 kilometres are each way, not the combined distance for the outward and return journeys. Check local conditions before setting out, as trail conditions can vary seasonally.
The Ruta del Barranco de la Lana begins in town at Pozo Celeste or Piletas. The Junta de Andalucía lists it as a route for sports activities. The Ruta Sierra Clara II has a different character: it is a short circular route with steep climbs. The higher section offers sweeping panoramic views. If you are comparing routes, you can consider their formats and terrain: one route has a specified starting point in town, while the other is shaped by its circular course and changes in elevation.
The Vía Verde de El Ronquillo follows a former railway line. It connected the Minas de Cala with San Juan de Aznalfarache; the railway was in operation for more than 50 years. The present-day route and its former use thus belong to different chapters in the town's history. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
At Pantano La Minilla, there are opportunities to spend a day with the family, enjoy the landscape and surroundings, have a barbecue and go hiking. A stay by the water thus adds another focus for the day to the various routes in the surrounding area.
Local history and exhibitions
The Parroquia del Divino Salvador was built in the early years of the 17th century and rebuilt between 1774 and 1777.
A small stone chapel was built in the first half of the 16th century on a levelled hill. It stood beside an old road and near the site of a medieval pilgrim cross.
The Sala de Exposiciones displays artistic and cultural works from the town; admission is free. To help visitors find local resources and activities, the Oficina de Turismo provides maps, books and audiovisual materials. Visitors can also receive personalised advice there.
Seasonal regional cuisine
Regional specialities include gurumelos (Amanita ponderosa), a mushroom characteristic of the area that is especially prevalent in March. You can try it in bars and restaurants in El Ronquillo. Its availability and the opportunity to try it depend on the conditions at the time.
Another seasonal highlight is the traditional matanzas, which take place every year in the winter months. Various cured meats and products from the Sierra are available, including chorizo, jamón and caña de lomo. Gurumelos are especially prevalent in March, while the matanzas take place in the winter months.
