Churches and historic buildings

The Iglesia de Santa María was built as the parish church of a suburb outside and away from the city walls. It is made of brick; its stone details include surrounds for openings and columns. Stone ribs can also be found in the presbytery. Since June 3, 1931, the church has been protected as a monument under the Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) designation. The historic ensemble of Sanlúcar la Mayor has been listed as a BIC since November 14, 2006.

The Iglesia de San Pedro del Castillo is the oldest church in Sanlúcar la Mayor. The Iglesia de San Pedro is a three-nave Mudéjar-style building and is also recognized as a BIC. Its tower is a former Arab minaret, separated from the mosque by a courtyard. The Iglesia de San Eustaquio has a different architectural layout: its interior is defined by three naves with pointed arches resting on pillars.

The Almohad wall also offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history. Construction began under the Almohads in the late 12th century; the wall originally had 46 towers. A section about 65 meters long, with three towers, has survived. This makes it possible to distinguish the wall’s historic extent from the portion preserved today, without confusing the surviving length with its original size.

Other cultural highlights include the Casa de Cilla, a typical 18th-century Andalusian building, and the sculpture of San Miguel. The Gothic sculpture, in the Flemish-Burgundian style, is attributed to Lorenzo Mercadante de Bretaña. It is displayed in the town hall in a case with controlled temperature and humidity. Green Corridor and routes

Sanlúcar la Mayor is one of the municipalities within the protected Guadiamar Green Corridor landscape area. Its central section runs north to south through the municipal area. The corridor can be explored on foot or by bicycle over a distance of more than 70 kilometers; a cycling route is available. The route can also be covered on horseback.

The Las Doblas recreation area has a seasonal artificial lagoon crossed by a wooden bridge. A wide variety of waterbirds live among the marsh vegetation. The Ruta Las Doblas is a circular route around the lagoon, about three kilometers from the town center. The route includes an accessible path with a wooden bridge across the lagoon; birdwatching and observing the flora and fauna are also possible.

Another option is the Ruta Camino Viejo – Camino de la Dehesa. This circular route is about eight kilometers long and is rated moderate. It passes the Las Doblas recreation area and the lagoon, within the protected Guadiamar Green Corridor natural area. Note the distinction when comparing distances: about three kilometers at Las Doblas refers to its distance from the town center, while about eight kilometers for the Camino Viejo refers to the length of the circular route. These are different measurements.

Festivals and traditions

The Feria y Fiestas de Mayo always takes place in May, but does not have a fixed calendar date. It is held exactly two weeks after the Feria de Sevilla. The tradition dates back to a livestock fair held on May 1. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific dates for the year in question.

Corpus Christi is also one of the town’s recurring religious traditions. It concludes with a procession carrying the monstrance through the central streets and squares of Sanlúcar la Mayor. The streets and squares along the procession route are covered with aromatic herbs.
