Fernán-Núñez: Architectural history, wine traditions and festivals
Accommodation in Fernán-Núñez
Fernán-Núñez brings together several themes to help you plan your trip: historic buildings, wine traditions, local festivals and a route to Montemayor. The town’s history is centred on protected buildings and churches with distinct historical layers. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, it is best to check the relevant programme.
Historic buildings and their layers of history
The Palacio Ducal and the adjacent buildings together form the historic ensemble of Fernán-Núñez. This ensemble was protected by Royal Decree 2495/1983 of 13 July 1983. The Palacio Ducal has two towers. It is important to distinguish between the palace and the ensemble: in addition to the palace, the protected ensemble includes adjacent buildings.
The present-day Iglesia de Santa Marina de Aguas Santas dates from the 18th century and stands on the remains of an older church built shortly after 1385. Its bell tower was originally one of the fortress towers. The church also has a collection of gold and silverwork, with pieces dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Several historical layers thus coexist in one building: the older church, the present-day church and the bell tower’s former function.
The Ermita de la Caridad takes you back to another chapter in the area’s architectural history: in 1525, the chapel of Santa Ana was built on its present-day site. The former Hospicio y Hospital de la Caridad served the needs of the sick and pilgrims. The Tercia, also known as the Mesón del Duque, has a clear historical connection to the local wine tradition: it was established in 1675 as a wine outlet. The Peña del Mirabrás is a flamenco club; major flamenco artists developed their careers on its stage.
Wine connections and routes
Fernán-Núñez is one of nine municipalities on the Ruta del Vino Montilla-Moriles. Another connection is the Ruta de las Fuentes, which runs from Fernán-Núñez to Montemayor via country estates and springs. The two routes have different emphases: one places the town within a wine route covering nine municipalities, while the other links it to a specific route via country estates and springs to Montemayor.
A historic irrigation structure is another feature of the area. It can still be seen in Fernán-Núñez today and was once used to irrigate the huertas, the local garden plots. The structure is no longer in use. Alongside the historic buildings and wine tradition, the area’s former water management is therefore another distinct aspect of its history.
Festivals with different focuses
For the Cruces de Mayo, May crosses are set up and decorated in the streets and squares of Fernán-Núñez on 2 and 3 May. These dates provide specific points of reference for planning a trip in May. The two Feria dates have different focuses and are each associated with their own festive occasions.
The Feria Real in honour of the Virgen del Tránsito includes, among other things, a procession with giant figures and large papier-mâché heads. The dates from the 13th to the 17th may change depending on the programme. The Feria and celebrations in honour of Santa Marina de las Aguas Santas, associated with the dates from the 18th to the 20th, include various fairground rides and other attractions. These dates too may vary according to the programme.
There are several ways to shape your travel plans: you can focus on the area’s architectural history, its wine and flamenco connections, the route to Montemayor or one of its festive occasions.
