When you choose Cardeña as your destination, you can plan your outings around hiking, wildlife watching and culture. The specific route details differ: the Sendero Cardeña–Aldea del Cerezo is a walking route, while the route to the Embalse de Tejoneras combines a drive with a subsequent walk.

Plan your hike and journey

The one-way Sendero Cardeña–Aldea del Cerezo is 6 kilometres long, takes about two hours and is rated easy. It starts in the centre of Cardeña and leads into a young dehesa. Check for any temporary restrictions before setting out.

Cardeña can be reached via the N-420, A-423 and A-420 roads. The N-420 connects the town with the Guadalquivir Valley. To follow the route to the Embalse de Tejoneras, first drive 5.47 kilometres from the Venta Nueva visitor centre, then walk 950 metres. The estimated total time is 45 minutes. Check local conditions before setting off.

Experience the landscape and nature

Rounded granite hills and gentle slopes shape the landscape of the Parque Natural Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro. Its vegetation types include dehesas, replanted pine forests and Mediterranean scrubland. An extensive network of trails offers opportunities for hiking, horse riding, donkey riding and cycling. These activities offer different ways to explore the area.

The Venta Nueva visitor centre in Cardeña presents the area’s Mediterranean landscape through its dehesa systems, scrubland and pine forests. The Jardín Didáctico Mediterráneo focuses on traditional plant uses and different ecosystems. The garden also showcases native plant species considered to occur exclusively in the municipality of Cardeña.

At the nearby Embalse de Tejoneras, you can use binoculars from observation points to watch little grebes, Eurasian coots, ducks and great crested grebes. The route there combines a drive with a walk; watching these bird groups is a distinct focus of the outing.

Architecture, history and local themes

The Mirador Astronómico is located near the centre of Cardeña, on the site of a former water reservoir. Its facilities include a computer-controlled digital planetarium. It can simulate the sky for any date and location on Earth, allowing astronomical topics to be explored from both a temporal and geographical perspective.

The Sala Expositiva El Arte de la Caza is a permanent exhibition devoted to hunting and various hunting-related uses. This gives it a different thematic focus from the Jardín Didáctico Mediterráneo, which explores plants, ecosystems and traditional plant uses.

Construction of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen began in 1950, and the church was inaugurated six years later. The former church had been completely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The present church has a Latin cross floor plan and Baroque-style decoration.

The Aldea de El Cerezo originated as a small settlement where around a hundred shepherds lived in stone houses in the dehesa by the Río Yeguas. It was later restored for rural tourism. You can explore the Aldea on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. The Feria del Lechón Ibérico is a food festival centred on suckling pig and accompanied by numerous activities. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates in advance.
