Villaharta: Springs, Trails and Sierra Scenery
Accommodation in Villaharta
Villaharta can be explored through three distinct aspects: its hilltop town centre, with steep streets and white façades; its iron-rich springs; and its trails with historic connections. When planning your trip, you can compare the routes by length, walking time and difficulty; some also lead to springs, a picnic area or a former monastery.
Hiking trails by time and route characteristics
The Ruta de las Fuentes Agrias is an easy circular route covering 8.38 kilometres, with a walking time of around three hours. It starts at Parque de Elías Cervelló in Villaharta. The Route of the Sour Springs II is slightly shorter, at 7.67 kilometres, and is also rated easy, with a walking time of around three hours. It runs through the Dehesa Nueva de Espiel-Villaharta and follows historic trails once used by spa guests to reach the San Rafael and La Lastra springs. The two routes can therefore be compared by difficulty and approximate walking time; they differ in length and described course.
The Merendero de Las Serranas–Camino de las Monjas route is five kilometres long and gains 184 metres in elevation. Sections follow the GR-48 and the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago; the route leads to a picnic area among holm oaks. The Camino del Molinillo to Arroyo de las Serranas has different details: this linear route is 2.6 kilometres long, moderately difficult, and takes around two to three hours for the round trip. Its stated points of interest include botanical, faunal and landscape features; walking time may vary depending on the season.
Another starting point is the Camino de la Mimbre. It begins at the junction of Calle Camino del Cementerio and the road to Obejo in Villaharta. Before setting out, check local information on trail conditions, signage and markers. This is particularly useful for the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago, whose current trail markings should be checked locally.
Springs and their history
The final section of the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago through Villaharta passes along the Cuesta de la Matanza to the iron-rich springs of El Cordel and Malos Pasos. Fuente Malos Pasos lies on the Cañada Real Soriana and is an important point on the pilgrimage route. Its iron-rich waters have a reddish colour. Fuente de El Cordel is also in the municipality of Villaharta and is closely connected historically with the Cañada Real Soriana.
At El Cordel, a regionalist-style hexagonal pavilion forms part of the spring’s setting. Built from exposed brick at the beginning of the 20th century, it is topped with a ribbed vault. Fuente Boca del Infierno adds a different architectural context to the history of the springs: this historic iron-rich spring emerges from an old water tunnel, is surrounded by scrubland, and once supplied the old pavilions of Balneario de Villaharta.
Dehesa, nature and townscape
The Camino de Pedrique leads into a dehesa landscape of Mediterranean scrubland, holm oaks, rockroses, mastic shrubs and broom. Birds of prey can be seen hunting in the area, and traces of wild boar or deer may also be found. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. A viewpoint offers panoramic views of Villaharta, its white façades and the Sierra del Enjambradero.
The townscape also has its own distinctive character: the old town sits on a hill, with steep streets and whitewashed façades. Villaharta’s skies are part of the Reserva Starlight de Sierra Morena. If this certification is important to your travel plans, check its current status.
Cultural traces along the trails
The Camino de Pedrique leads to the former Monasterio de Pedrique, which now houses the Casa Museo de Aurelio Teno. Works by Aurelio Teno are displayed there; check separately whether it is currently open before visiting. The town is also home to the restored Horno de Cal “Calerín”, a testament to vernacular industrial architecture. Together with the pavilion at Fuente de El Cordel, it reveals different architectural traces of the region: a structure at a spring on the one hand, and a restored lime kiln on the other.
