Pedro Abad offers several ways to plan your trip: religious architectural history, the legacy of Santa Rafaela MarĂa, Roman archaeology, and festivals and activities by the river. Would you like to focus mainly on buildings and traditions, follow a route, or make time for water and nature? The specific places and conditions can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

Churches, Convent and Religious History

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to the first quarter of the 14th century and retains its original layout with three naves. Its façade features a 16th-century portal with a round arch and coffered pilasters. Its decoration combines Gothic and Renaissance motifs.

The Iglesia de Santa Rafaela María was built in 1950 in a historicist style, with a single nave, vaulted ceilings and polychrome marble elements. A crypt beneath the altar contains the tombs of members of Santa Rafaela María’s family. The Convento de las Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is her birthplace; an oratory is located in the room where she was born. The convent also houses the Museum of Santa Rafaela María. Check current opening arrangements before your visit.

The Mezquita Basharat is also among Pedro Abad’s religious sites. It is considered the first mosque built in Spain after almost eight centuries. Its library contains numerous Islamic texts in various languages and dialects. The town thus brings together distinct histories of religious architecture and remembrance, each with its own architectural and cultural details.

Civic Heritage and Local Festivals

The Pósito Municipal dates from 1785 and was built from locally sourced Molinaza stone. Today, the building houses the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo. Check current access arrangements before visiting the centre.

Religious traditions include El Prendimiento, a procession held on Maundy Thursday. The tradition dates back to the 17th century and is based on an older religious mystery play drawn from Gospel texts. The Fiesta de Santa Rafaela MarĂa takes place every year on 18 May and includes a three-day street celebration on Calle Madre Filomena.

On Holy Saturday evening, Pedro Abad holds La Quema de los Judas. During this tradition, grotesque Judas figures are hung in the streets and burned to the sound of drums, with taunting and lively neighbourhood celebrations. At the festivities in honour of Santiago el Menor, the traditional “chorchos”—lupins or salty snacks—are also handed out. If you are travelling specifically for a celebration, check the dates and programme in advance.

Roman Route and River Landscape

The Ruta Calzadas Romanas is a 10-kilometre linear route of moderate difficulty that can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It leads to Cerro de Alcurrucén, where numerous remains of the vanished Roman city of Sacili Martialium have been found. The ancient city of Sacili Martialis/Martialium is located on the Alcurrucén estate in Pedro Abad. Its known collection of marble sculptures comes from a significant art-historical context; most of the sculptures apparently belonged to a statuary group dedicated to the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Route details may change; check local conditions before setting out.

At the Embarcadero Recreativo y Centro Acuático de Pedro Abad, activities may include canoeing, rowing, stand-up paddleboarding, cycling, hiking and birdwatching. Their availability may depend on local conditions and arrangements. The river area lies within the Natura 2000 site of special conservation importance for the middle Guadalquivir and provides a habitat for numerous birds and mammals. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.

Access to the Embarcadero is from the A-4, via exit 367 towards Seville or exit 370 towards Madrid. The Camino de Alcurrucén then follows the CO-410 for about 5 kilometres to the destination. Check local road conditions before travelling.
