Iznájar sits on a hill and is surrounded by the waters of the reservoir named after the town. This makes it a peninsula, connected to the mainland by the Agromán and Fernández bridges. For your trip, this setting offers two distinct perspectives: the historic town center and the waterside landscape. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether architectural history, viewpoints, hiking trails or activities on the reservoir will shape your trip.

The castle, architectural history and Patio de las Comedias

The Castillo de Iznájar Hisn-Ashar dates back to a phase of construction that began around the middle of the 8th century. The castle was altered through successive renovations and expansions up until the 15th century. In the La Villa district, designated a Site of Cultural Interest, stands the Renaissance church of Santiago Apóstol. It was built between 1547 and 1638 within the medieval town walls. Here, you can see the medieval fortifications and Renaissance architecture together in the town center.

The Patio de las Comedias is decorated with blue flowerpots and includes, among other features, the Rincón del Beso and the Torre de San Rafael. The courtyard got its name because theatrical performances were held there in the Middle Ages. Iznájar’s cultural history also includes Semana Santa, whose roots go back to the early 17th century. During the processions, residents dress up as Jews, Pilate, Apostles or Romans. Since 2010, the Sala-Museo Antonio Quintana has displayed examples of the extensive work of the artist, who was born in Iznájar.

Viewpoints and trails around Iznájar

The Mirador de la Villa in the historic town center offers views of the Sierra de la Ventanas and the Arroyo de Priego. When the reservoir’s water level is low, you may also see the Puente Molinillo, the old road, a factory chimney and the remains of the former Iznájar, which was flooded by the reservoir. The Mirador Cruz de San Pedro offers a different perspective: a panoramic view of the reservoir and historic town center.

The Sendero Fuente del Conde, also known as the Camino de Magán, is a circular route about 5.5 kilometers long. It starts in Fuente del Conde, a settlement within the municipality of Iznájar, and is certified by the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo. The route passes through olive groves and typical Mediterranean woodland vegetation before climbing to the Sierra de Campo Agro at an altitude of 929 meters. From the trail, you can see the Embalse de Iznájar, also called Lago de Andalucía, and Pico de la Tiñosa.

Reservoir, nature and activities

The signposted, two-kilometer educational trail at the Centro de Interpretación del Embalse de Iznájar offers another way to explore the landscape. Five information panels cover birds of the reservoir and Tajo de Valdearenas, as well as reptiles, fish and amphibians. The Río Genil and the Embalse de Iznájar are also among the topics. The center presents the natural and cultural values of the area around these waters; the interpretation content on site may be updated. While the Sendero Fuente del Conde focuses on its circular route, landscape and viewpoints, the educational trail and its panels are designed to present a range of topics.

The Valdearenas area is suitable for fishing and birdwatching, as well as water sports and hiking. At Lago de Andalucía near Iznájar, activities on offer include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating and Big SUP. Providers and availability may change. These activities offer different starting points for planning your trip: nature watching, exercise on land or activities on the water.
