Satipo: City Views, Plaza and Museo Callegari
Accommodation in Satipo
When planning a trip to Satipo, you can focus on different things: the city’s history at the plaza, the view from Mirador Cerro Satélite, the collections at Museo Callegari, and archaeological remains in Satipo District. The sites in the city and the destinations in the district offer different points of interest for planning your trip.
The Plaza and the City’s History
On Plaza Principal de Satipo, there is a gazebo with a bust of R. P. Rafael Gastelua. Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís was built at its current location after the 1947 earthquake. Satipo therefore offers different historical points of reference: a memorial on the plaza and a church whose construction dates to the period after the earthquake.
City Views and Notable Structures
Mirador Cerro Satélite offers a panoramic view of the city of Satipo. The summit is also home to a chapel dedicated to Señor de Cachuy and a four-meter-high reinforced-concrete cross. The chapel’s dedication and the cross’s specific height and building material give the viewpoint other distinctive features beyond the city panorama. This makes the mirador a different focus from the plaza and church: city views and structures come together at the same summit.
Collections at Museo Callegari
Museo Callegari in Satipo displays an ornithological collection from the central Selva, featuring cock-of-the-rocks, eagles, falcons and toucans. It also includes striking insects collected by the Callegari family over many years. The exhibits also include stone artifacts for practical use and from military contexts. The museum also has a botanical garden. The natural history collections, stone objects and garden represent different areas of interest; the bird species give the ornithological collection a specific regional focus.
The museum is located at Avenida Francisco Irazola No. 791, in the seventh block, south of Plaza de Armas. If you plan a visit, confirm the address before setting out. This gives you the street section mentioned and its location in relation to Plaza de Armas, without confusing the different collection areas with directions.
Petroglifos de Huanacaure in Satipo District
In Satipo District, Petroglifos de Huanacaure is located on the left bank of the Río Satipo, near Puente Blanco. The site comprises 42 bas-relief engravings on a dark brown rock that may be granite. The petrogliphs are believed to be approximately 3,500 years old; the inventory compares them with finds at Centro Poblado Paratushiali. The number and form of the engravings, along with the cautious estimate of their age, make this an archaeological destination with clearly identified features.
The road route from Plaza Mayor de Satipo to the ticket booth at Puente Blanco consists of two sections totaling 16.5 kilometers. The first section to the turnoff for Centro Poblado Pampa Mandarina is 10.5 kilometers and takes about 20 minutes; the next section is 6 kilometers and takes about 8 minutes to the ticket booth. Both sections are described as unpaved roads suitable for private cars. Road conditions can change, so check the latest information before driving.
Other Highlights in the District
Cataratas de la Resistencia in Satipo District comprises seven waterfalls ranging from 8 to 22 meters in height. Satipo is also known for producing coffee and cocoa. These add two other regional themes to the city’s cultural sites: waterfalls and agricultural products. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the city’s history, collections, viewpoints and destinations in the district without treating these different places as interchangeable.
