Discover San Martín de Pangoa
Accommodation in San Martín de Pangoa
San Martín de Pangoa brings together a clearly defined urban center, recurring festivals, and distinctive buildings. Plaza Mayor is the city’s principal civic and social space; during the Fiesta Patronal, it also hosts gastronomic and agroindustrial markets. The Iglesia de San Martín de Pangoa and the Parque Ecológico add their own architectural features. This makes it possible to plan your stay around a specific focus: the festivities, church architecture, or the design of public spaces.
Plaza Mayor and the Fiesta Patronal
Plaza Mayor covers 6,400 square meters and has a perimeter of 320 meters. It contains an 18-meter-high lookout tower. The structure is circular and clad in wood, and it is topped by a feather sculpture inspired by the crowns of Indigenous peoples. Its circular shape, wooden cladding, and feather crown give the lookout tower a distinctive, clearly describable appearance.
The Fiesta Patronal takes place annually from May 1 to 7, with its main day on May 6. It has been celebrated since 1975. Recurring events include solemn Masses and processions, as well as civic parades and street parades featuring traditional clothing and brass bands. The gastronomic and agroindustrial markets in the plaza add two distinct types of market to the festival program. Specific events may vary from year to year, so check the information for the festival year you plan to visit.
Church architecture and interior details
The Iglesia de San Martín de Pangoa features a colonial style, with two side bell towers and four cornices that end in a dome. Its rectangular floor plan measures 20 meters wide and 37 meters deep. At the rear are four large, square stained-glass windows. The main altar features a cedar sculpture depicting the crucified Christ placing one hand on the head of Saint Martin de Porres. The towers, cornices, and dome define the exterior, while the windows and altar sculpture add different design accents to the interior.
The Parque Ecológico
The Parque Ecológico de San Martín de Pangoa is the city’s main park. It covers 8,312 square meters and has a perimeter of 364 meters. Its design is especially easy to appreciate in two pools: in one, water flows from a giant mate gourd onto a plate made of mate as well. The other features three fountains arranged in a cloverleaf shape. While the lookout tower and festival markets stand out in the plaza, the park’s appearance is shaped by its two differently designed water features.
