Rainforests, Protected Areas and Wildlife

Palena Province offers several nature-related themes to consider when planning a trip: temperate rainforests, protected areas and rivers. Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park is part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Southern Andes Biosphere Reserve. Corcovado National Park preserves temperate rainforests. In Futaleufú National Reserve, the huemul is the most significant animal species and is considered threatened. This offers different points of interest for nature enthusiasts: a park’s inclusion in the biosphere reserve, the protection of temperate rainforests and the significance of the huemul.

Corcovado National Park has approximately 133 plant species, 18 mammal species and 64 bird species. Ecological inventory figures may be updated, so these figures should be understood as estimates.

Lakes, Rivers and Getting There

Lago Palena National Reserve is located on a lake shared by Chile and Argentina. On the Argentine side, it is named General Vintter. Another geographical point concerns the RĂo Corcovado: when it enters Chile, it becomes the RĂo Palena. The lake therefore has two names in different countries, while the river changes its name.

The Carretera Austral begins in Puerto Montt and crosses the entire province of Palena. If you include this road in your travel plans, check road and ferry conditions before setting out.

Activities and Practical Conditions

In Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park, the Sendero El Volcán is 4.4 kilometers long and leads to the edge of Chaitén’s crater. Its length and endpoint give you specific details to consider when including this trail in your itinerary.

A description from 2022 notes that the Sendero Ventisquero Yelcho has interpretive signs and can be reached overland from the Carretera Austral in the municipality of Chaitén. Check current trail conditions before visiting.

Lago Yelcho is highlighted as suitable for recreational fishing. If you plan to fish there, check the applicable regulations and seasonal conditions beforehand. The RĂo FutaleufĂş is described as suitable for rafting and kayaking. Water levels, operators and safety conditions vary seasonally; check conditions for your travel dates.

A 2012 SERNATUR inventory lists access to Termas de Porcelana exclusively by water. It describes pools on the banks of the Río Porcelana with a water temperature of 60 °C. Check access and operating conditions locally before visiting. Hot springs in Hualaihué are also among the attractions highlighted for Palena Province; find out about visitor access and operations there.

Culture and Trip Planning

The 2026 edition of the Festival del RĂo Palena includes a traditional descent of the RĂo Palena and performances by local young artists. The festival serves as an important showcase for local businesses, including those in traditional cuisine and rural accommodation. If you plan to attend, check the dates for the relevant edition.

The water-based activities mentioned are clearly distinct: recreational fishing is highlighted at Lago Yelcho, while the RĂo FutaleufĂş is associated with rafting and kayaking. Protected areas, hot springs or the festival may also shape your travel interests.
