Llanquihue Province offers a wide variety of natural places to explore: the accessible Sendero El Chucao, viewpoints in Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, and the wetlands along the Río Maullín. This gives you several different options for your trip: accessible trail infrastructure, forests and wildlife watching, or a protected area that spans several municipalities. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider which of these experiences you want to shape your stay; this will help you plan your trip around your interests.

Trails and wildlife watching

At Monumento Natural Lahuen Ñadi, the Sendero El Chucao is accessible. Infrastructure may be adjusted for operational reasons, so please check its current condition before your visit. It has a 600-meter wooden ramp and a 1.07-meter-wide wooden boardwalk. In the forest or its immediate surroundings, visitors may spot species including the Chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula) and Darwin’s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii). Wildlife watching is therefore possible not only in the forest itself, but also in its immediate surroundings.

A different kind of trail can be found in Reserva Nacional Llanquihue. In the family area of Reserva Nacional Llanquihue, Sendero Mirador Río Blanco is open up to the river crossing and accessible daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This time window is important when planning your visit; check the trail status and hours again beforehand. Reserva Nacional Llanquihue can be reached from Puerto Montt via Ruta 7, the Carretera Austral, to Chamiza Bridge. Road conditions can change, so it’s worth checking them before you set off.

Viewpoints and access

Parque Nacional Alerce Andino has two viewpoints: one in Correntoso and one along the trail to Lago Sargazo. The park can be reached via public road V-65 from Puerto Montt through Correntoso to Lago Chapo; the route is 46 km long. These are two different points of reference for planning your outing: the viewpoints are in Correntoso and along the trail to Lago Sargazo, while the road description continues to Lago Chapo. Check road conditions before you set off.

Wetlands and protected areas

The Humedales del RĂo MaullĂn Natural Sanctuary is an extensive wetland covering approximately 8,096.8 hectares. It is located in the municipalities of MaullĂn, Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt and Los Muermos, in Llanquihue Province. It is known for the presence of the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis). The fact that it spans several municipalities gives the area a different geographical scale from that of a single trail or viewpoint.

Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales also provides an important point of reference for understanding the protected areas: it is part of the Bosques Templados Lluviosos de los Andes Australes Biosphere Reserve. Almost all of the national park lies in Llanquihue Province, with a smaller portion in Osorno Province. If you’re organizing nature destinations by province, keep this boundary in mind.

A broader look at the Los Lagos Region

In the broader context of the Los Lagos Region, cultural experiences complement the natural attractions. In Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, alerce trees (Fitzroya cupressoides) grow across nearly 20,000 hectares. The churches of Chiloé are a unique example of outstanding ecclesiastical wooden architecture in Latin America, bringing together Indigenous and European cultures. The esplanades associated with the churches are venues for religious festivals; community activities such as the Minga are part of their intangible cultural value.

Frutillar has been recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Music. Visitors come for the Semanas Musicales festival and performances at Teatro del Lago. Check event dates if you’d like to include them in your trip plans. The culinary traditions of the Los Lagos Region include Chilote cuisine, German desserts and Cordero al Palo. These regional cultural and culinary experiences complement the natural attractions of Llanquihue Province, offering more ways to enjoy a stay in the wider region.
