Maullín brings together religious traditions and historic sites with coastal and wetland landscapes. The church, plaza and waterfront promenade are at the heart of the city; nearby, beaches, river landscapes and birdwatching add to the picture. The wetlands in the surrounding municipality, in turn, form a larger natural area. These different scales can help you tailor your stay to culture, coast or nature.

Religious traditions and sites in the city center

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Maullín and the adjoining plaza form the city's religious and social center. Religious festivals, processions and novenas are held there. These include the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, as well as the novenas del Carmen, del Rosario and del Niño Jesús. The church, plaza and these religious events provide a tangible focal point for Maullín's cultural life.

Plaza de Armas is located in Maullín's historic center, near the waterfront promenade. The Paseo Costanera in the city center offers views of the Río Maullín and features a salvaged cannon from one of the last Spanish strongholds. Alongside the religious center, the historic downtown, river views and a historic artifact are therefore key parts of the town's story.

The history of the earlier settlement also links a waterway with onward travel: Chilotes arrived by boat at the colonial settlement of Maullín, then continued their journey along the Camino Real to Osorno and Valdivia. The sequence distinguishes arrival by boat from the subsequent journey along the Camino Real.

Coastal landscapes nearby

Two distinct coastal attractions lie nearby. Mar Brava is a 13-kilometer-long beach known for its large waves and surfing. Amortajado offers cliffs, a beach, and river and wetland landscapes. It also has an observatory for birdwatching, including Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis).

This distinction is useful for planning: Mar Brava is defined by the length of its beach and its waves, while Amortajado brings together several landscape types and birdwatching. If you plan to visit Amortajado, check the facilities there in advance.

Wetlands in the municipality

Within the surrounding municipality, the Maullín wetlands include mudflats, salt marshes, sandy beaches, freshwater lagoons, swamps, estuaries and small waterways less than six meters deep. The term “wetlands” therefore encompasses several types of landscape here; swamps are just one part of the range described. The contrast between salt marshes and freshwater lagoons is also part of the landscape.

The Río Maullín wetland system forms an aquatic biological corridor between the lake ecosystems of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Thus, the description of the natural area encompasses not only individual landscape types but also the connection between these Andean lake ecosystems and the Pacific.

Ferries and coastal shipping

Maullín has a platform for ferry docking and a port for coastal shipping. If a ferry trip is part of your travel plans, check the schedule in advance.
