Melipeuco – Culture, Geology and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Melipeuco
Melipeuco brings together the territorial identity of the Mapuche-Pehuenche and a landscape shaped by volcanoes, lava and geological outcrops. The municipality is a strategic starting point for exploring the AraucanĂa Andina. Visitors planning a stay will find a range of themes to consider when planning their trip: culture in town, viewpoints and nature destinations, and hiking trails with distinctly different durations and difficulty levels.
Arriving and finding your way
The main S-51 route connects the regional capital, Temuco, directly with Melipeuco. Buses run frequently every day from Temuco bus station to Melipeuco; check the schedule before you travel. The Parador TurĂstico de Melipeuco is located in the urban area.
Culture and history in Melipeuco
The Museo HistĂłrico de Melipeuco is a museum space within the Parador TurĂstico. The museum opened to the public on February 16, 2017, with permanent exhibitions. The exhibition “Huellas de un Pasado Maderero” was created in collaboration with the municipality and focuses on Melipeuco’s cultural heritage.
A 2015 report also describes a collection of obsidian arrowheads in the Parador’s exhibition space. Some of the pieces were said to be about 5,000 years old; the finds came from different parts of the municipality. At the time, the collection was intended to be a permanent feature.
Mapuche-Pehuenche identity is also reflected in Melipeuco’s cuisine and in wool and wood crafts. Nearby Reserva Nacional China Muerta is part of the Reserva de Biósfera Araucarias, established by UNESCO in 1983.
Volcanic landscape and geological traces
Native araucarias (Araucaria araucana), CiprĂ©s de la cordillera (Austrocedrus chilensis) and Lleuque (Prumnopitys andina) grow in Reserva Nacional China Muerta. Cascada ChufquĂ©n is in the municipality, beside the road, and drops about ten meters over a lava escarpment on the Sollipulli volcano. At CañadĂłn del rĂo Truful Truful, there is a viewpoint and an information panel. From there, visitors can see a wall about 75 meters high, exposed by the erosion of the RĂo Truful Truful. Its layers illustrate the eruption history of Llaima volcano over the past 13,000 years.
From Mirador Escorial, near Geositio Lava de 1751, the view extends across the glacial valleys of Alpehue, Tracura and El Escorial, as well as parts of Llaima and Sollipulli volcanoes. The viewpoint is at kilometer 4 of Camino Icalma. Another geological feature is Isla de vegetaciĂłn: the CoigĂĽe forest survived Llaima’s 1957 eruption; the site is associated with Parque Nacional ConguillĂo.
Hiking and excursions from Melipeuco
The municipality describes Sendero de Lava Volcánica as one of its main tourist attractions. There are 250 kilometers of trekking routes in the municipality. The route to the southern entrance of Parque Nacional ConguillĂo runs from Temuco via Cunco and Melipeuco to the Truful Truful sector. Park conditions and restrictions may vary; check them before setting out.
The details for two trails in Reserva Nacional China Muerta show different time commitments: Sendero IntegraciĂłn China Muerta is 435 meters long, takes 30 minutes one way and is rated easy. Sendero Huella del Puma is 3.6 kilometers long, takes 3.5 hours one way and is rated moderate. These figures can help you choose between a shorter and a longer hike; the times given are for one way in each case.
Cerro Huallerupe is also relevant when planning excursions: it is one of the peaks closest to urban Melipeuco. Reaching the summit is described as a physically demanding full-day hike. Check local conditions before setting out.
