Garay Department offers different areas of focus for planning a trip, from cultural history to landscapes. In Cayastá, the ruins of Santa Fe la Vieja, the archaeological park, and a 300-hectare wetland are the main attractions. Santa Rosa de Calchines adds a historic church, a nature park by the river, and a municipal camping and swimming area to the options. You can choose places and activities according to whether you are especially interested in archaeology, nature trails, or the waterscape.

Santa Fe la Vieja and the History of Cayastá

In Cayastá, the ruins of Santa Fe la Vieja preserve the site where Juan de Garay founded the city of Santa Fe on November 15, 1573. The city remained there until it was moved in 1660 to the site of today’s provincial capital. In 1957, Santa Fe la Vieja was declared a National Historic Monument. The Parque Arqueológico preserves and displays architectural structures and artifacts from the original city layout. This brings the story of the city’s founding into direct relation with the traces of its urban plan at the time.

The Casa Ambientada de Vera Muxica in the Parque ArqueolĂłgico Santa Fe la Vieja reconstructs a main house from the first half of the 17th century. In the area of the Iglesia de San Francisco, excavations uncovered the remains of more than two hundred people buried there; today, replicas are used to show them. A reconstruction of a historic dwelling and the presentation of archaeological finds complement the preserved structures of the city layout.

The Museo del Recuerdo in Cayastá displays objects from the everyday lives of the immigrants who lived in the town. This focuses on the immigrants’ way of life and differs from the themes of the city’s founding and archaeological excavations. Plaza San Martín is also part of the townscape: it is a green space in the center of Cayastá. Along Costanera Mario Lartiga are the Mural de los 150 Años, created by the artist Niño de Cobre, and the historic Casa del Poeta Julio Migno. The house is dedicated to the local writer and his literary legacy.

Wetland, Nature Trails, and Water Activities

Parque Provincial Cayastá is a 300-hectare wetland in Garay Department. Two signposted nature trails support environmental education and differ in their routes: the shorter one follows the banks of Arroyo Paso del Tigre to its confluence with the Río San Javier; the longer one runs along the entire stream. This lets you choose between a shorter route with a clearly identified endpoint and a longer stretch along the stream. If you plan to take one of the trails, check for current information before your visit, as trail infrastructure may change.

Cayastá also offers activities on the water: boat trips and fishing excursions are available in the island system of the Río Paraná. Check current conditions with the providers before your trip. You can consider time on land along the nature trails and activities on the river as different areas of focus for your trip planning.

Santa Rosa de Calchines: Monument and Riverside Sites

Construction of the church in Santa Rosa de Calchines began in 1861 with the Franciscans. In the 19th century, it served as a landmark in the advance toward the frontier. The parish church is designated a Provincial Historic Monument. Its construction history and monument status shed light on two different aspects: the church’s historical role and its recognition as a significant provincial building.

La Islita Nature Park in Santa Rosa de Calchines is located on the riverbank. There is also a municipal camping and swimming area at Arroyo Calchines. Check current conditions before visiting, as details about visitor facilities may change. Along with its historic sites, Santa Rosa de Calchines thus offers other points of interest for your trip planning, while the nature park’s riverside location should not be confused with the facilities at the stream.
