San Carlos De Bariloche: Culture, Architecture and History
Accommodation in San Carlos De Bariloche
San Carlos de Bariloche is located within Nahuel Huapi National Park. When planning a hotel stay, you might consider which cultural topics interest you: the architecture of the Centro Cívico, the Museo de la Patagonia, the Catedral Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi, ceramics or the history of the historic city center. The attractions offer different perspectives—from architecture and collections to crafts and history through the stories of people and neighborhoods.
Urban History at the Centro Cívico
On March 17, 1940, the Centro Cívico de San Carlos de Bariloche complex was inaugurated together with the Museo de la Patagonia. The museum houses an extensive ethnographic and historical collection. The Centro Cívico was built from cypress wood, larch wood and tuff from Cerro Carbón. This brings two different approaches to the city’s history together: the museum focuses on its collection, while the Centro Cívico’s focus is on the building and its materials.
The Centro Cívico’s clock tower also adds a fixed visual display to the architectural experience: it shows historical images daily at 00:00 and 18:00. These two times give you a specific reference point for planning your day. If you want to see the display, you can plan to visit in the early evening or at midnight.
Neo-Gothic Architecture and Visiting Hours at the Catedral
The Catedral Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi is the city’s most important Catholic church. The Neo-Gothic building was inaugurated in 1946. Its inauguration therefore came after the Museo and Centro Cívico were inaugurated together in 1940; the difference in dates and the distinct architectural styles offer their own historical perspectives. Except during special events, the Catedral is open to the public Monday through Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00. As hours may change, check opening times before your visit.
Ceramics and the History of the City Center
At Cerámica Bariloche, visitors can watch experienced ceramicists decorate ceramic pieces by hand. The site also includes a museum with ceramic pieces and original objects. Unlike the ethnographic and historical collection at the Museo de la Patagonia, the focus here is on ceramics and their hand decoration.
The Free Walking Tour presents the history of San Carlos de Bariloche through the people and main neighborhoods of the historic city center. It offers a different approach from the collection at the Museo or the architecture of the Centro Cívico: the focus is on people and neighborhoods. Check the Free Walking Tour’s schedule and availability before your trip.
A Steam Train Service to Los Juncos
A tourist and historic steam train service to Los Juncos is associated with the Estación de Ferrocarriles in Bariloche. Check before your trip to see whether the service is operating. Its named destination and historic character distinguish it from the collections and buildings in the city center.
