In Malargüe Department, volcanic landscapes, caves, a significant wetland and winter sports come together. A planetarium and historic culture can also be highlights of your trip. When planning your days, you might focus on wildlife watching, geological formations, activities in Las Leñas or culture.

Volcanic landscapes and geological formations

Reserva Total La Payunia encompasses more than 800 volcanoes and is considered one of the volcanic areas with the greatest density and diversity in the world. La Payunia includes expansive landscapes of colorful volcanic materials; it is also home to a protected area for fauna and flora. The variety of volcanoes and vast landscapes give this area its distinctive geological character.

In the galleries of Caverna de las Brujas, the formations tell a story of water erosion and mineral deposits: stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns and coral formations can be seen. Areas open to visitors include Sala de la Virgen, La Gatera, Sala de la Estalagmita Gigante and Sala de los Encuentros. This allows you to appreciate the different formations both individually and as part of the galleries.

The Castillos de Pincheira, 27 kilometers southwest of the city of Malargüe, offer a different kind of rock formation. River and wind erosion have shaped the volcanic rocks into towers and natural walls whose appearance is reminiscent of medieval castles. At Pozo de las Ánimas, meanwhile, two sinkholes eroded by underground rivers form green pools. Each is nearly 300 meters in diameter. These two places show how differently erosion can shape volcanic landscapes.

Wetland and birdwatching

Laguna Llancanelo is a 650-square-kilometer wetland. It lies 75 kilometers from the city of Malargüe, along Ruta 186, at an altitude of 1,280 meters above sea level. The provincial nature reserve is home to flamingos, black-necked swans, herons and ducks. Since November 8, 1995, Laguna Llancanelo has been part of the Ramsar Convention.

Laguna Llancanelo offers photo safaris and birdwatching. Visitors must request tickets in advance, and must be accompanied by an authorized guide. Check these requirements before your visit.

Activities in Las Leñas

Las Leñas is one of Latin America's leading ski resorts. The area has slopes and lift-accessed off-piste areas. The longest uninterrupted descent on marked slopes is 7 kilometers; there are also 16 lifts. Activities include cross-country skiing, snowboarding, freeride skiing, off-piste skiing and a freestyle park.

In summer, Las Leñas offers a different range of activities: trekking, ziplining, climbing, rappelling, horseback riding and mountain biking. The season is therefore an important factor in your planning: the summer sports listed here complement the skiing and snow activities rather than replace them.

Planetarium and cultural heritage

Guided tours of Planetario Malargüe explain three solar artifacts. The tour then leads either to the science museum or to the ESA exhibits, depending on the visit. The digital planetarium dome presents shows and interactive content and seats up to 65 people.

Capilla Histórica Nuestra Señora del Rosario is considered one of the most important monuments in Malargüe, Mendoza. It is a living testament to the history and cultural identity of Malargüe Department. Together with the planetarium, it adds a cultural perspective to a trip whose natural highlights range from volcanoes and caves to the wetland.

Mendoza in the broader travel picture

The wider destination of Mendoza is home to other natural attractions. Cerro Aconcagua is in Mendoza Province, reaches an elevation of 6,962 meters and is the highest peak in the Americas.
