Departamento Capital: History, Culture and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Departamento Capital
Archaeological traces of the former city of Mendoza, cultural institutions and expansive green spaces shape Departamento Capital. Its museums and historic sites tell the story of the city; parks, plazas and seasonal events round out the picture. You can divide your time between history, culture and nature according to your interests.
Experience the City's History and Culture
At the Museo del Área Fundacional, you can see excavations containing remains of the former city of Mendoza. A historic city tour also takes you through the Área Histórica de la Ciudad and includes archaeological sites from the original city. If you are interested in the city's development, you can see these sites as different ways to explore its past.
The Museo del Pasado Cuyano “Dr. Edmundo Correas” is housed in a mansion considered the oldest house in the city, built in 1873. Here, history is reflected not only in the museum exhibits but also in the building itself. La Enoteca offers another perspective on local history: it is the only surviving architectural testament to the Escuela Nacional de Vitivinicultura, which operated from 1897 to 1939.
The Espacio Cultural Plaza Independencia (ECPI) includes three municipal institutions: the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno Mendoza, the Teatro Municipal Julio Quintanilla and the Biblioteca Municipal Ricardo Tudela. The “Plaza de las Artes” craft fair is also held regularly at Plaza Independencia. Individual vendors may change. The plaza also has recreational games for children and an open-air Teatrino, where urban artists present various performances; the program may vary.
Promenade, Tango and Wine
Paseo Alameda is a historic promenade spanning seven city blocks, laid out by General San Martín. The Balcón de Tango is located along the promenade: tango classes are held there on Sundays from September to April, followed by milonga events with live music. As the offering is seasonal and the current program is subject to change, it is advisable to check dates before visiting.
La Enoteca connects this cultural picture with wine. It offers wine tastings and guided tours for visitors and locals alike. Regular tours also include the “Viaje al corazón de Vendimia” exhibition. As dates, prices and exhibition status may change, it is best to check these details in advance.
Green Spaces and Views
Parque General San Martín has been a protected urban environmental area since April 17, 1996. It covers more than 400 hectares and is home to over 300 plant species. Within the park, Teatro Griego Frank Romero Day has hosted the highlight of the Vendimia celebrations since 1963. The park thus combines a large natural area with an established cultural landmark.
Cerro de la Gloria offers views of the Andes and the city of Mendoza. It can be reached via walking paths or paved roads; parking, a police post and restroom facilities are also available there. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. Reserva natural Divisadero Largo offers a different experience: its trails provide views of the Andean foothills and insights into the reserve's natural and cultural heritage.
Practical Information for Your Stay
A SUBE card is required to travel on city buses and the Metrotranvía. The MENDOTRAN app provides information on stops, schedules and routes; check the requirements and details before your trip. For getting around the city, Mendoza has around 90 kilometers of bike paths. The network's length may change as it is expanded.
The municipal tourism authority operates tourist information centers at the Municipalidad de Mendoza and Plaza Independencia. Check opening hours before planning a visit. The cultural sites, green spaces and activities on your itinerary can help you choose where to stay; the places and experiences described highlight the different ways to explore Departamento Capital.
Mendoza Province
Mendoza also offers a distinctive landscape at the provincial level. Cerro Aconcagua is in Mendoza Province, rises to 6,962 meters and is the highest peak in the Americas. Parque Provincial Aconcagua was designated a provincial park in 1983 and covers 71,000 hectares. These figures relate to the wider Mendoza destination and complement the urban impressions of Departamento Capital with a regional perspective.
