Rancul: Lagoon, Railway Traces and Local History
Accommodation in Rancul
Several specific themes can help with travel planning in the Department of Rancul. In Caleufú, the Paseo del Lago features railway traces; nearby, the towns of Rancul and La Maruja offer gastronomic, historical, and landscape perspectives. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip.
Paseo del Lago in Caleufú
The Paseo del Lago is a recreational and tourist park with an artificial lagoon. An observation tower stands on an island; the site also includes a waterfall, paths, green spaces, and railway remnants. Corrugated-metal sheds and a landing stage evoke the town’s railway history. Grills, small covered seating areas, and tables complete the scene. Here, parkland and railway traces come together in one place.
The Paseo opened on November 15, 2015. In 2025, the municipal council declared it a place of public and tourist interest. An earlier event is also part of its history: in 2016, a nighttime skywatching session with a telescope took place there.
Cultural and Railway Sites
In Caleufú, the María Auxiliadora Chapel stands next to Plazoleta de la Estación on former railway land. The Museo del Deporte Motor opened in 2022 as part of the program for Caleufú’s 111th anniversary. The former railway station is also designated as the Museo Municipal Luis Fiandrino. The chapel, motorsports museum, and former station each offer a different historical perspective. If you are planning a museum visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Nearby, in Rancul, the El Tentador restaurant museum brings together gastronomy and history. It has been part of the town’s identity since 1980. The Resto Bar Museo El Tentador is also part of a network of establishments spread across different towns in the province of La Pampa. RCC beer is produced at Estancia Las Margaritas in Rancul. Together, these places offer insight into different gastronomic and historical themes.
La Maruja and the Caldén Forest Region
La Maruja is also nearby, in the heart of the Pampean Caldén forest region. Large Caldén trees stand on the railway station grounds. According to one interviewee, they particularly catch the eye of people visiting La Maruja for the first time. These trees create a distinctive landscape feature; the Paseo del Lago in Caleufú offers a different view of the region, with its lagoon and railway remnants.
La Pampa as a Wider Travel Area
The wider travel area of La Pampa offers further examples of natural and cultural heritage. The Reserva Provincial Parque Luro is a 7,600-hectare protected area, home to more than 160 bird species. The Museo El Castillo, located within the same reserve, is designated an Argentine National Historic Monument.
Parque Nacional Lihué Calel is also part of the wider travel area of La Pampa. A trekking loop there passes through mountain valleys and forests of Caldén and Jarilla trees. The ruins of an old estancia lie beside Arroyo de las Sierras, while a cave in the Sierras Malas contains rock paintings. These examples broaden the view from the townscapes of Caleufú, Rancul, and La Maruja to protected areas and historical sites in La Pampa.
