Hucal: Salt Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Hucal
There are several ways to plan a trip to Hucal: the Salina Colorada Grande between the departments of Hucal and Caleu Caleu, museums and historical connections in General San Martín, and walks and activities in Jacinto Arauz. You can shape your stay around the landscape, local history, or events; be sure to check the relevant visiting requirements and dates.
Salt Landscapes and Planning Your Visit
Salina Colorada Grande is a salt deposit associated with the salt known as “sal de cosecha.” The educational tourist trail at the salt flat has several viewpoints and dedicated signs to provide visitors with information about the saltworks. A guided tour is required to walk at the salt flat; check the current local visiting arrangements in advance.
Another nearby salt flat is La Colorada Chica, also known as Laguna Larga; it is 30 kilometers south of Jacinto Arauz. The two names refer to the same place, which can be helpful when learning about this area.
Museums and Local History
General San Martín is in the Department of Hucal. A 2023 municipal description locates the Museo Villa Alba in the General San Martín railway station. It reports that the museum space was restored while preserving its original façade, and mentions railway office items in the first room. The collection described there also includes historical objects from various institutions, documentary heritage, and everyday objects from families in General San Martín.
The Museo Histórico y del Recuerdo de la Asociación Israelita Dr. Theodor Herzl opened on May 24, 2023. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting. The synagogue is also connected to the town’s history: it was moved to its current location in the 1970s.
The saltworks also feature in the town’s historical designations. The Fiesta de la Sal was declared the Provincial Salt Festival in 2003; in the same year, General San Martín was declared the National Capital of Salt.
Walks, Cheese, and Events in Jacinto Arauz
Jacinto Arauz can be reached via Route 35, which connects Santa Rosa, the provincial capital, with Bahía Blanca. The town has the self-guided urban walking tour “Tras los pasos del médico rural.” As the route and interpretation may change, check in advance what information and route are currently available.
Quesería NC offers a visit to the cheese factory and cheese for sale; arrange your visit in advance. Chacinados El Gallego offers factory visits and cured meats for sale, such as salami and chorizo. Check the visiting arrangements in advance here, too.
The Encuentro Federal de Folklore is scheduled for the first week of March. Jineteada and gaucho skills demonstrations at Centro Criollo Don Jacinto are listed for the fourth Sunday in October. The exact event dates may vary from year to year. Confirm the dates if attending a festival is important to your travel plans.
