Federación lies on the shore of Lake Salto Grande. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which side of the destination you want your trip to focus on: the waterfront and water sports, the town’s history, crafts, or regional sweets. These themes provide a concrete framework for exploring Federación according to your own interests.

Waterfront, Costanera, and Water Sports

Federación has beaches and bathing areas along the shores of the Uruguay River and Lake Salto Grande. Both bodies of water are therefore important landmarks during your stay. The Costanera is a pleasant place to stroll and adds to the ways you can explore Federación on foot.

Water activities are also part of what the destination offers: in Federación, you can kayak, windsurf, and ride jet skis. This gives you different options to consider as you plan—a walk along the Costanera or one of the water sports mentioned. You can choose which to include based on your personal travel interests.

Near Federación, the Chaviyú Nature Reserve lies on Lake Salto Grande. It offers panoramic views of the natural surroundings and their various native animal species, as well as views of the small islands formed during the construction of the hydroelectric dam. This nearby natural area adds another perspective on the landscape to the waterfront and activity options.

Museums and the History of Federación

The Museum of the Settlements (Museo de los Asentamientos) offers a glimpse into Federación’s past. Its building also tells the town’s story: it was moved piece by piece from the site of the former Federación. There, it was the first church in the town at the time.

Federación’s museums also include the Museum of the Image (Museo de la Imagen) and the Museum of Thermal Baths (Museo de Termas). The Federación Aquarium Museum (Museo Acuario Federación) features a small aquarium with various fish from the reservoir. Alongside the town’s history, images and aquatic life offer other themes to explore during a visit to Federación.

Crafts and Alfajores

At the Paseo de los Artesanos “El Algarrobo,” artisans from Federación exhibit work made from wood, capybara leather, semi-precious stones, and other regional materials throughout the year. The paseo offers a unique look at the town’s crafts and the variety of materials used.

The Mis Pichones artisanal alfajor factory offers a different kind of experience: visitors can learn about the production process and sample different varieties and flavors. While the crafts on display are the focus at the paseo, Mis Pichones is about making and tasting alfajores. If you’re considering these kinds of experiences when choosing where to visit, the two offerings are clearly distinct in their focus.

A Dated Event

The 42nd National Lake Festival (Fiesta Nacional del Lago) took place in Federación from January 8 to 11, 2026. Its cultural and sports program included all the city’s beaches. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the dates for your own travel period.
