Villa San José lies on the banks of the Río Uruguay. Several distinct themes come together when choosing this destination: hot springs, a white sand beach, museums and regional history.

Hot Springs and Special Experiences

Termas San José has twelve pools with temperatures ranging from 32 °C to 42 °C. The complex also includes a water park and a spa. An eno-thermal experience combines wine with thermal water, adding another dimension to the hot springs. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether you are most interested in the pools, the facility’s other features, or the combination of wine and thermal water.

The Río Uruguay, Beach and Nature

Balneario San José has an extensive beach area with white sand. The Reserva Natural Balneario San José, four kilometers from the city center, offers a different kind of nature experience. It was established as a municipal nature park to protect riverside forests and native flora and fauna. Around 100 species can be observed in the reserve. The beach and the reserve offer different highlights: one focuses on the sandy beach, the other on nature conservation and observing species.

Museums and the History of the Colony

The Museo Histórico Regional de La Colonia San José preserves the memory of the Swiss, French and Italian founders of the San José colony, now San José. The Museo Ciencia Naturales displays fossils from the surrounding area, including the jaw of a Stegomastodon. The two museums raise different questions: one focuses on the colony’s founding history, while the other explores the natural history of the surrounding area.

The Museo Provincial Molino Forclaz is also part of the town’s historical heritage. In 1985, it was declared a National Historic Monument by Decree 3066. In 2003, Decree 6676 declared it architectural and historical cultural heritage of Entre Ríos Province. The two honors were awarded at different times and recognize different levels of cultural heritage.

Tastings and Regional Highlights

Licores Bard offers tastings and tours at its factory. This gives travelers interested in local products a specific place to visit, alongside the hot springs and museums. Together with the eno-thermal experience, it makes it possible to plan a stay that includes wine and tastings as well as thermal water or history.

More Destinations in the Colón Department

In the broader destination of the Colón Department, Balneario San José offers 1.5 kilometers of white sand beach on the Río Uruguay. Hot springs are also among the possible travel themes elsewhere in the department: Termas Colón has thirteen pools, including nine outdoor pools and three indoor pools. Termas Villa Elisa covers 41 hectares and has ten pools for different uses and temperatures. Termas San José is listed as having temperatures from 32 °C to 42 °C; the other two facilities can be compared by their number of pools, their layout or their size.

Parque Río de los Pájaros is located in the city of Colón, in the Colón Department. This multipurpose nature area was created to protect a wetland and its biodiversity. Activities there include walks, observing flora and fauna, and bike rides. Guided visits with local tourism guides are available by prior reservation. This is important to keep in mind when planning if you are specifically interested in a guided visit.

The cultural history of the Colón Department extends beyond Villa San José. The ruins of the Falansterio are a historical and cultural attraction in Colonia Hughes. Museo Histórico La Clarita is housed in a former railway station. In Pueblo Liebig, the former Fábrica Colón was a large slaughterhouse that gave rise to the town and operated for around 70 years. These destinations point to different aspects of regional history: an attraction, a historic building and the development of a town around an industrial enterprise.

Another regional highlight is Granja La Administración. It includes an animal farm, a dairy and a cheese factory; cow milking is offered in the late afternoon. Visitors are also offered a country-style snack featuring regional products, craft beer and homemade bread. Destinations like these give trip planning in the Colón Department a different focus from the beach, hot springs or museums in Villa San José.
