Villa Allende: Architecture, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Villa Allende
Discover Villa Allende through a range of interests: architecture, walks and hikes, and golf. Notable landmarks include the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, designed by Augusto Ferrari; the native woodland around the Arroyo Saldán; and the Córdoba Golf Club. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Villa Allende, you can start by considering whether architectural history, time in the greenery, or golf is your main priority.
Architecture and Ferrari’s work
The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen was designed by Augusto Ferrari in 1930. It is distinguished by its French Gothic Revival style, openings made of cedar and pine, and Solomonic columns. The building thus combines a clearly dated design with specific architectural features.
The Paseo Ferrari pays tribute to the work of Augusto César Ferrari. In Villa Allende, he completed a large part of his work during the 1930s and 1940s. This includes the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen and numerous mansions. The church can therefore also be viewed in the wider context of Ferrari’s work in the city.
Other buildings make their own distinctive impression. Casa del Arroyo Seco is one of the most historically valuable residences in Villa Allende. Castillo San Possidonio was built between 1932 and 1936; set beside a stream, it retains its romantic character and is covered in ivy. La Golondrina, meanwhile, is a chalet with Oriental influences and Ferrari’s most modern building.
These differences help you identify each building by its particular features: the Parroquia is notable for its style and architectural elements, the Castillo for its construction period and ivy, and La Golondrina for its chalet form and Oriental influences.
Nature and golf
The native woodland around the Arroyo Saldán is suited to walks and hikes. The Paseo Luchesse is another local landmark for outdoor recreation in Villa Allende. If you’d like to spend time outdoors, you can choose between the woodland along the Arroyo and this separately named recreation area.
The Córdoba Golf Club caters to a different interest: it has 18 holes and a traditional English-style golf course. This offers a clear contrast between walks and hikes in the native woodland and a specific option for playing golf. When planning your trip, you can make a simple comparison between spending time in the landscape and pursuing an interest in golf.
A closer look at the Departamento Colón
The wider destination of Departamento Colón offers additional cultural and landscape highlights. In Jesús María, Parque del Oeste is a few blocks from the city center, along the western waterfront promenade. The nearly 100-hectare site is a protected area. The park is therefore a distinct regional landmark, separate from the nature attractions in Villa Allende.
The Estancia de Jesús María–Museo Jesuítico Nacional is also part of this regional context. It belongs to the system of Jesuit estancias in Córdoba, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The tour brings historic areas used for wine production to life, including the rooms where the grapes were processed and the wine cellar where they were subsequently stored.
Estancia de Caroya was established in 1616 as a rural agricultural estate. Estancia Santa Catalina, founded in 1622, developed into the most important center of livestock production. Its complex includes a church, the priests’ residence, workers’ quarters, a mill, and a water reservoir. These examples add different historical uses and architectural forms to the picture of Departamento Colón.
