Discover Mendiolaza
Accommodation in Mendiolaza
Mendiolaza combines green spaces and squares, time by the Río Saldán, art and gastronomy. The Fiestas Patronales de Mendiolaza 2026 also provide a distinctive cultural highlight.
Green Spaces, Sports and Time by the Water
Mendiolaza’s many squares and green spaces offer places to play. The volleyball, basketball and soccer courts are grouped together at the Polideportivo Municipal. This brings together opportunities to play outdoors and three specific ball sports as distinct options. When considering what kind of leisure activity you would most enjoy during your stay, you can look at these offerings separately.
At the Río Saldán, you can relax by the water, listen to birdsong, have a picnic and drink mate. This is a different kind of experience from the sports grouped at the Polideportivo: here, the focus is on the water, listening to the birds and taking a picnic break. This gives the river its own place alongside the green spaces and municipal sports complex.
Art, Gastronomy and Festival Culture
Painters and photographers regularly exhibit at the Museo a Cielo Abierto. Together with the Fiestas Patronales, these exhibitions offer another facet of Mendiolaza’s cultural life. At the 2026 Fiestas Patronales de Mendiolaza, a traditional gaucho procession wound through the city streets, with hundreds of gauchos and horses taking part. The exhibitions and procession also differ in their timing: the exhibitions take place regularly, while the procession described here was part of the 2026 edition.
Mendiolaza is designated a gastronomic center, a “Polo Gastronómico.” Its culinary offerings include restaurants and craft breweries. If food and breweries are part of your travel plans, this focus adds a distinct culinary perspective to the options by the water and in the green spaces.
More destinations in Departamento Colón
The wider destination of Departamento Colón also encompasses landscapes and cultural attractions in other places. In Jesús María, Parque del Oeste is a few blocks from the city center, along the western riverfront promenade. The protected area covers almost 100 hectares and offers a landscape that contrasts with Mendiolaza’s green spaces and recreational opportunities.
The Estancia de Jesús María–Museo Jesuítico Nacional is part of the Jesuit Estancias of Córdoba system, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. A tour of the estancia brings historic winemaking areas to life: the rooms where grapes were processed and the wine cellar where the wine was subsequently stored.
The Estancia de Caroya was established in 1616 as a rural agricultural enterprise. The Estancia Santa Catalina was founded in 1622 and developed into the most important center for livestock production. Its buildings and facilities include a church, the priests’ residence, workers’ accommodations, a mill and a water reservoir. The two estancias illustrate different aspects of regional history: Caroya’s beginnings as an agricultural enterprise and Santa Catalina’s importance to livestock production.
The Centro Turístico del Legado Jesuítico y Camino Real is located at the entrance to the Estancia Jesuítica de Colonia Caroya in Departamento Colón. A 2015 description notes that an outbuilding at the center contains a graphic and conceptual summary of the former Camino Real in northern Córdoba. This adds a distinct perspective on the history of this former route to the stories of the estancias.
The Festival Nacional de Doma y Folklore is also part of the region’s event calendar: its 60th edition in 2026 drew more than 450,000 people over ten days of events. Alongside the historic estancias and the Parque del Oeste protected area, this event offers a different perspective on Departamento Colón from Mendiolaza’s local leisure, art and gastronomy offerings.
