The five-kilometre-long sandy beach of Playa Unión lies beside the mouth of the Río Chubut. Conditions on the open sea make surfing possible there, a sport that has been practised for more than 20 years. Surfing areas include La Curva and Puerto Rawson. Wind and wave conditions also allow for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Conditions vary depending on the time of year; if water sports are a deciding factor in your travel dates, take this seasonal difference into account when planning.

Wildlife watching from the estuary to the open sea

Patagonian dolphins, sea lions, elephant seals and coastal birds can be observed in the Río Chubut estuary. A boat trip operated by Estación Marítima Commersoni departs from Puerto Rawson and is dedicated to watching Commerson's dolphins. It lasts approximately one hour. The route passes the river mouth and Puerto Rawson, with its yellow fishing fleet, before reaching the open sea; sea lions and coastal birds can also be seen along the way. As schedules may change, check departure times in advance.

Centro de la biodiversidad Aquavida offers another way to explore nature. Visitors can discover marine, freshwater and land animals of Patagonia there. Various halls and laboratories showcase the biodiversity of the Río Chubut estuary and Bahía Engaño.

Water sports and time outdoors

Club Regatas Rawson is dedicated to competitive and recreational rowing, as well as canoeing. Its Escuelita de Canotaje gives the entire community the opportunity to take up canoeing. Those interested in water sports will find rowing and canoeing here as activities in their own right, alongside those on the sea.

For time outdoors, Parque Recreativo Municipal Rawson offers green spaces, barbecue areas and recreational games for day visits. On the Río Chubut, Tamariscos Golf Club has a ten-hole golf course and offers tourists daily use of the course. The two options offer different experiences: one focuses on community recreation in green surroundings, the other on golf by the river.

History and culture

The interactive Museo 1923 features historical exhibits and reconstructed historical spaces. Its themes include the early history of Playa Unión, including the arrival of the railway and the first settlers. Reconstructed spaces include a railway station with the Mauricio Battistina ticket office, the Roselli Bar and Confitería, and the interior of Antonio Garbarini's house.

The Welsh chapel Ricardo Berwyn was founded in Rawson in 1881 and is considered the oldest chapel in the Río Chubut Valley. Food is also part of the local experience: Rawson's tourism offering highlights fish and seafood dishes, especially langostino, which are served in restaurants near the pier. Menus and offerings may change.

Travel planning information

The paved Ruta Provincial No. 7 is 72 kilometres long and runs through the entire Lower Chubut Valley from 28 de Julio to Rawson. In Trelew, Ruta Nacional No. 3 and Ruta Provincial No. 25 meet: the former connects the north and south of Argentina, while the latter links the coast with the Andean region of Chubut.
