Discover Gaiman Department: Welsh heritage and landscapes
Accommodation in Gaiman Department
Visitors choosing Gaiman Department as a destination can focus on different interests: Gaiman’s Welsh heritage, routes along the Chubut River and day trips in the surrounding area each offer something different. Museums and historic buildings provide insight into the town’s history; outdoors, river landscapes, the valley and the Patagonian plateau alternate.
Gaiman: Welsh history and culture
Welsh tradition lives alongside Mapuche culture in Gaiman, and the Chubut River runs through the town. The Primera Casa de Gaiman, the town’s first home, was built in 1874 by David Roberts and his family. At the Museo Histórico Regional, you can explore the history of the Welsh colony. Its collection includes photographs of the first Welsh settlers and official plans from 1886. These show the distribution of plots and planned irrigation canals.
The Museo Casa del Poeta offers another perspective on family life. The museum is housed in an early 20th-century Welsh-style house; its five furnished rooms offer a glimpse into family life and the traditions and customs of the descendants of the first colonists. Capilla Bethel is also one of the Welsh chapels in Gaiman that visitors can tour.
At Bryn Crwn (Loma Redonda), the chapel’s history spans several building phases: residents built their first chapel there in 1884, and a school for children was also established inside. A replacement building constructed in 1896 was destroyed in the great flood of 1899. The present-day Capilla Bryn Crwn was inaugurated in 1900.
The Túnel del F.C.C.C was built in 1914 to extend the Ferrocarril Central Chubut railway line westward. The approximately 300-metre-long tunnel is a self-guided passage featuring audiovisual material about the tunnel’s history, up to the line’s closure in 1961. Check current conditions before visiting. The historic walking tour includes Gaiman’s main streets, such as Michael D. Jones, 28 de Julio and Juan C. Evans.
Tea, crafts and walking tours
Welsh tea is a distinctive culinary feature of Gaiman. It is served in teapots with colourful knitted tea cosies. It is accompanied by homemade bread, scones, butter, lemon or cherry preserves, and a variety of tarts and cakes. Varieties include lemon pie, apple, walnut and cream cakes, as well as the traditional Torta negra. Welsh black cake, lemon preserves and red-fruit jams are also considered culinary souvenirs.
Local crafts are also part of the cultural offering. Handicraft souvenirs include teapots and tea cosies, wooden spoons or “spoons of love,” Welsh dragons, and wool and leather goods. Agritourism businesses in Gaiman welcome visitors on tours led by the owners. Depending on the timing or season, you may be able to observe agricultural activities and learn about rural life in the valley.
River routes and nearby landscapes
The Valle Inferior del RĂo Chubut is characterised by green, fertile landscapes that stand out against the surrounding Patagonian plateau. Walks along the Chubut River offer a chance to enjoy this scenery. The bluffs surrounding the valley offer panoramic views and are suitable for hiking and observing native flora and fauna.
At Parque PaleontolĂłgico Bryn Gwyn, a walking trail leads through millions of years of geological history, with fossils exposed along the way. The different trails and landscapes offer distinct experiences: riverside walks are the main attraction by the river, while the bluffs combine hiking with nature observation. In Dolavon, picnic areas in groves by the irrigation canal in the town centre and near the pedestrian suspension bridge over the Chubut River invite you to take a break.
Dolavon and Villa Florentino Ameghino near Gaiman Department
Dolavon adds further cultural and seasonal highlights. The Carnavales de Dolavon take place every February and are described as the largest carnival celebrations in Chubut Province. Residents and members of local youth art workshops make the parade floats; the Comparsas travel from different parts of the PenĂnsula ValdĂ©s region. For specific travel plans, it is advisable to check event dates and the programme. According to the stated schedule, a crafts and producers’ festival takes place on the third Sunday of each month; check the date before your visit. Dolavon’s grain mill, built in 1927, remained in operation until the 1940s and is now preserved as a museum.
In Villa Florentino Ameghino, the landscape differs markedly from the surrounding steppe: a 225-metre-long dam, turquoise water, red volcanic rocks, gorges and still-visible marine sediments define the scenery. Sport fishing is possible there and at Dique Florentino Ameghino, from the dam or from a boat. Frequently sought-after species include trout, perch and native pejerrey. The villa also offers camping and barbecue areas, a river beach and guided visits to a cave with rock paintings. Check the availability of guided visits before travelling.
