Discover Languiñeo Department
Accommodation in Languiñeo Department
For planning a trip to Languiñeo Department, you can focus on several different themes: Piedra Parada Caldera and its volcanic history, the hiking trail in Cañadón de la Buitrera, and nature and cultural attractions in the surrounding area, including Tecka. If you’re looking for a hotel in Languiñeo Department, this distinction can help you tailor your search to your travel interests.
Piedra Parada and Cañadón de la Buitrera
The Piedra Parada Protected Natural Area covers 132 hectares of Patagonian steppe and lies between Languiñeo and Cushamen Departments. The protected area stretches along the Río Chubut beside Provincial Route No. 12, between Gualjaina and Paso del Sapo. Piedra Parada is an ancient caldera with a base 100 meters across and a height of 240 meters. It bears witness to volcanic activity dating back 50 million years.
Cañadón de la Buitrera adds a hiking experience to the geological highlights: a five-kilometer trail winding through a canyon between walls of igneous rock that rise up to 200 meters. The trail length and the height of the walls describe two different dimensions of the same landscape: the course of the trail and the relief of the canyon.
Laguna Aleusco and its protected status
Laguna Aleusco Protected Natural Area is a 1,200-hectare natural reserve in the Patagonian steppe of Languiñeo Department, near the city of Esquel and the rural municipality of Colan Conhué. The lagoon protects nesting sites for Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis) and other waterbirds. It is classified as a strict nature reserve or wilderness area. One important detail for your plans: Laguna Aleusco is not open to visitors.
Tecka: Festivals, activities, and remembrance
Tecka, the administrative seat of Languiñeo Department, lies along National Route No. 40, close to the destination. The traditional regional Fiesta del Calafate is held there every year in January. Tecka also offers fly fishing, wildlife watching, and horseback riding. The activities range from regional traditions to wildlife observation and outdoor recreation.
Tecka is also home to the Mausoleum of Cacique Inacayal, a historical landmark. His remains were buried in Tecka on April 19, 1994. The mausoleum is 150 meters from Route 40, on its eastern side and opposite the town of Tecka. Its precise location by the road and the burial date offer different historical and geographical points of reference for this memorial site.
Regional orientation
Tecka lies along National Route No. 40. Provincial Route 17 provides access from the northwest to the Andean area of Corcovado and Lago Vintter. The two routes offer different points of reference for getting around the region.
