Leleque is shaped by local history, La Trochita, and Museo Leleque. Its historical points of reference range from the Southern Land Co. to a settlement that grew around a railway station and the cultural and archaeological interpretation offered by the museum. This makes it possible to understand the destination through both railway history and the history of the peoples of Patagonia.

Local History and La Trochita

Leleque was the administrative center of the Southern Land Co., which was founded in London in 1889. The historic settlement developed within the Estancia around a La Trochita railway station; the railway connected El Maitén with Esquel. The historic Museo Leleque is 100 meters from the La Trochita tracks. This distance offers a concrete point of reference for the railway theme, while the settlement’s origins mark its historical connection to the Estancia.

Museo Leleque: History and Collection

Museo Leleque presents the history of the peoples who lived in Patagonia. This includes social changes, conflicts, beliefs, and religious rituals. The museum’s perspective on the past therefore encompasses not only social developments but also conflicts and religious practices.

The exhibition comprises four halls: “Pueblos Autóctonos,” “Encuentro de Dos Mundos,” “El Principio del Fin: asentamiento, sedentarismo y decadencia,” and “Los Pioneros.” The Spanish titles refer to themes ranging from Indigenous peoples and the encounter of two worlds to settlement, sedentary life, decline, and pioneers. The Museo Leleque collection also includes more than 14,000 archaeological objects.

El Boliche and the Estancia

El Boliche recreates a general store as it looked in the 1920s. Handicrafts are sold there, and objects and pictures are displayed. The reconstructed store offers a different focus from the exhibition halls: it presents a concrete picture of a 1920s shop, while the exhibition explores the history of the peoples of Patagonia and related themes.

Museo Leleque is located in a rural area near the main complex of Estancia Leleque. The Estancia grounds include a chapel and the main house of the historic Estancia complex. Both are considered representative of Argentina’s former rural culture. Alongside the museum and railway history, visitors can therefore see buildings associated with this historical cultural context.

You can distinguish between the historical themes when choosing your destination: the settlement’s origins and the railway station lead to local and railway history; the halls and archaeological collection at Museo Leleque offer a different perspective on Patagonia’s past. El Boliche and the Estancia buildings provide their own perspectives on former rural culture.
