Zubtsovsky District: Estate History, Museum and Springs
Accommodation in Zubtsovsky District
Zubtsovsky District offers a variety of reasons to visit: the history of the estate in Volosovo, a local history museum in Zubtsov, a memorial complex in Pogoreloye Gorodishche, and a natural monument featuring springs in ravines. The topics range from architecture and regional history to remembrance and a distinctive way to experience nature. You can choose what to explore in the district based on the aspects that interest you most on your trip.
The Stepanovskoye-Volosovo Estate
The estate of the princely Kurakin family in Volosovo is an architectural monument dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Construction of the main house began between 1792 and 1798. The estate received the second name “Stepanovskoye” after Prince Stepan Kurakin; construction of the new manor house began under his direction.
For those interested in historic architecture, the estate is a clear point of reference in the district: it has a documented family history and a recorded start of construction. The information about the main house and the new manor house describes separate aspects of its history, which can be considered individually.
Local History and Remembrance
The Zubtsov Local History Museum is located in the historic center of Zubtsov, in an architectural monument dating from the 19th century. Its exhibition spans three halls and covers the history of the region from its settlement through the mid-20th century. Zubtsov lies at the confluence of the Volga and Vazuza rivers. The museum’s location thus combines insight into regional history with the city’s geographic setting.
Another focus is Pogoreloye Gorodishche. Its memorial complex includes a military cemetery containing the remains of 520 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Second World War. The memorial wall commemorates 1,800 local residents who did not return from the Great Patriotic War. The cemetery and wall serve different purposes: one commemorates fallen soldiers, while the other remembers residents from the surrounding area.
Springs and Nature Experiences
The state natural monument “Rodniki Kurkovskie” consists of three springs in ravines. The spring-fed pool is used for extreme bathing year-round. The focus here is both on the distinctive landscape and on how the pool is used throughout the year.
A recurring event also adds another reason to visit: since 2008, the intermunicipal folk art festival “Barynya-Kapusta” has been held every autumn in Zubtsov. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant autumn.
More Nature Experiences in Tver Oblast
Beyond the district, Tver Oblast offers more nature-related activities. The Central Forest Reserve offers guided tours on the ecological trails “Tainy Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka.” The educational trail “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” runs through a raised bog whose vast open expanses are completely covered in moss and where unusual plants grow. Visitors travel in their own vehicles for the excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog. If you plan to go, check availability in advance.
You can hike to the “Barsuchikha” cordon in Tver Oblast as a day trip or stay overnight in a forest hut. The hike passes through southern taiga forest and a raised bog. Choosing between a day hike and an overnight stay helps with planning your time; the route’s landscape also offers a distinctive nature experience within the broader destination of Tver Oblast.
