Kalininskiy District: Art, Music and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Kalininskiy District
Kalininskiy District can be explored through a range of cultural themes: artists’ biographies and music in Knyazevo, estate history in Krasnaya Nov, and history and remembrance in Emmaus and Mednoye. The Orsha Ascension Monastery adds a religious site at the confluence of the Orsha and the Volga. When choosing a hotel, the locations of the places you plan to visit are a useful starting point: first decide which stops will shape your stay, then compare their locations with your own itinerary.
Artists and Estate History
The school museum in Knyazevo has five halls with 15 exhibition areas. Its themes include the artist’s childhood and youth, family, first caregivers and teachers, as well as education and creative work. The subjects therefore range from early stages of life to artistic practice. Visitors interested in biographies will find several different perspectives on an artist’s life and surroundings here.
At the Domotkanovo estate museum in Krasnaya Nov, a dedicated exhibition area focuses on W. A. Serov’s time at the estate and the works he created there. Other exhibition themes include the history of the estate, its owners and guests, and cultural life. The artist’s stay and the broader history of the estate are presented side by side, allowing you to consider both its connection to Serov and its role as a cultural place.
Music and Festivals in Knyazevo and Domotkanovo
The Lemeshev Song Festival is held every year in midsummer, on the singer’s birthday, in Knyazevo. Amateur ensembles and professional artists perform, and prizewinners of international Lemeshev competitions also gather there. The “Sirenevoe Domotkanovo” festival has a different focus: it takes place in late May and is closely connected to the history of the estate. When planning your trip, it is worth checking the dates for your chosen year in advance. The two festivals offer different cultural highlights and take place at different times of year.
Monastery and Historic Memorial Sites
The Orsha Ascension Monastery is an Orthodox convent of the Tver Eparchy. It is located at the confluence of the Orsha and the Volga. As a place to visit, the monastery is clearly distinct from the museums and Domotkanovo estate: its religious character and location at the rivers’ confluence are the main features.
The Museum of the Kalinin Front is in Emmaus, at the historic site where Soviet troops broke through German defenses on December 5, 1941. The exhibition includes two exhibition halls and an additional exhibition space. It consists mainly of two-color poster collages with original photographs, diagrams and documents created using computer technology. The history of the site is thus presented alongside an exhibition whose visual and documentary materials take a distinctive form.
The Mednoye Memorial Complex includes a Polish military cemetery. Its features include a Wall of Lamentation, a bell, cast-iron name plaques and metal crosses above 25 mass graves. A general tour of the complex is available; check current visitor arrangements before your visit. In the wider travel destination of Tver Oblast, the memorial complex also commemorates Soviet citizens who were victims of political repression in the 1930s–1950s, as well as murdered Polish prisoners of war from the Ostashkov camp of the NKVD of the USSR.
Nature in the Wider Destination of Tver Oblast
Those looking beyond museums, estate history and memorial sites will also find nature experiences in the wider destination of Tver Oblast. The Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve offers an excursion to the “Staroselskiy Mokh” raised bog, for which visitors use their own vehicle. The “Boloto Staroselskiy Mokh” ecological trail passes through a picturesque raised bog, with broad open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. Guided tours are also offered along the “Tainy Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails.
A hike to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. There are several nature experiences to choose from: a visit to a raised bog, guided trails, and a hike with two possible durations. These activities complement the cultural themes of Kalininskiy District with distinct nature destinations in the wider destination of Tver Oblast.
