Toropetsky District brings together archaeological evidence, protected historic sites, museums and designated natural areas. Examples can be found at Lake Ruchyeiskoye, in the villages of Chistoye, Pozhnya and Bubonitsy, and in Toropets. This allows you to plan your trip around different themes: traces of earlier settlements, local history, or nature and wildlife conservation.

Archaeology and Cultural Heritage

On the shore of Lake Ruchyeiskoye, near the village of Kosilovo, there is a hillfort and a group of burial mounds. They date approximately from the 8th to the 13th century. This approximate dating places the archaeological evidence within a broad historical period; its location on the lakeshore also gives the site a clear connection to the landscape.

The village of Chistoye is home to the Ilyinskaya Church and a park on the former estate of the Golenishchev-Kutuzov family. Both are cultural heritage sites of federal significance. The church and park thus represent different forms of cultural heritage in a named location. If you plan to visit either site, check access arrangements in advance.

Museums in Pozhnya and Toropets

The Museum of Partisan Glory is located in the village of Pozhnya and is closed for repairs. The Toropets Local History Museum displays a model of the 16th-century Toropets Kremlin. The collection also includes household items, tools and implements from earlier times, including equipment for processing flax and a loom. The examples therefore range from a historic building to objects from everyday life and crafts.

The local history museum’s military exhibition includes a peasant hut presented as a kind of headquarters for a partisan unit that operated in Toropetsky District. If you plan to visit the local history museum, it is advisable to check current access arrangements in advance.

Nature and Wildlife Conservation in the Area

Toropetsky District has 95 protected areas of regional significance, including 58 state nature reserves. The Chistyi Les Biological Station and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) bear cub rehabilitation center operate in Bubonitsy. These two aspects give the nature theme different dimensions: designated protected areas on the one hand, and specific facilities for nature and wildlife on the other. If you are considering visiting the facilities in Bubonitsy, check the arrangements directly in advance.

Nature Experiences in Tver Oblast

Tver Oblast also offers other nature experiences. The Central Forest Nature Reserve offers guided tours on the “Tayny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails. An excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog is also available; visitors use their own vehicles. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” ecological trail passes through a picturesque raised bog with vast, open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants.

The hike to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station can be done as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest hut. Along the way, you can see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The two options differ mainly in their planned duration and whether they include an overnight stay.

The reserve’s central estate has a visitor center with information about the organization’s history and structure, a regular exhibition of children’s work, and a souvenir shop. The Central Forest Nature Reserve Museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; one room is dedicated to scientific research.
