Kalininskiy District: Museums, Memorial Sites and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Kalininskiy District
In Kalininskiy District, things to see range from exhibitions on military history and art to a historic church building and a river landscape. In Emmaus, museums focus on the Kalinin Front and V. A. Serov; in Mednoye, a memorial complex commemorates victims of political repression. Another museum is dedicated to the singer Sergei Lemeshev.
Military History and Remembrance
The Kalinin Front Museum is located in Emmaus. Its exhibition covers eleven major military operations, including the Kalinin Defensive Operation and the Kalinin Offensive Operation. These two named examples offer a concrete insight into the exhibition's themes.
The Mednoye Memorial Complex commemorates Soviet citizens who were victims of political repression from the 1930s to the 1950s, as well as Polish prisoners of war from the Ostashkov NKVD camp in the USSR who were executed. The museum and information center at the complex is dedicated to events from the mid-20th century. It tells the stories of residents of Kalinin Oblast who suffered repression and were later rehabilitated. This makes the memorial site a place of remembrance both for those who were persecuted and killed and for personal life stories.
V. A. Serov: Collection and Estate History
The V. A. Serov Memorial Art Museum in Emmaus has more than 300 exhibits, including personal belongings, rare photographs and documents, and original paintings by Serov. The size of the collection may change. The V. A. Serov House Museum in Domotkanovo has a different focus: its exhibition comprises four rooms and covers the history of the estate, its owners and guests, and its cultural life. A separate section is devoted to Serov's stay at the estate and the works he created there. The difference may help you choose what to see: in Emmaus, the focus is on the collection; in Domotkanovo, on the history of the estate and its cultural life.
Sergei Lemeshev in Staroye Knyazevo
The museum of Sergei Yakovlevich Lemeshev (1902–1977), People's Artist of the USSR and soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre, was founded on July 12, 1986, in his home village of Staroye Knyazevo. The initiative came from the singer and music historian V. D. Vasilyev. Since 1990, the museum has been housed in a rebuilt building on the old foundation of the church school where Lemeshev studied from 1911 to 1914. The history of the museum thus connects Lemeshev's artistic career with his school years in his home village.
Church Architecture in Turginovo
The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in Turginovo was built between 1824 and 1835 with funding from I. N. Nepluyev and expanded between 1876 and 1887. The five-domed, four-pier structure is neoclassical, while also featuring elements of the pseudo-Russian style. A multi-tiered bell tower topped with a spire completes the building. The church therefore offers a chance to see a range of architectural features and several phases of construction.
Akulkina Roshcha and the River Landscape
“Akulkina Roshcha” is a pine forest on the right bank of the Vyazma, where it flows into the Shosha. The protected area lies east of the village of Brednevo in Kalininskiy District, Tver Oblast. Alongside the museums and historic buildings, the forest offers a different perspective on the district: here, pines, riverbanks and the confluence shape the landscape.
