Discover Pinhão: wine, railway and Douro
Accommodation in Pinhão
Pinhão lies in the geographic centre of the demarcated Douro wine region; many Port wine estates are located there. Several experiences depend on dates and availability. If you are planning a particular visit, it is best to coordinate your travel dates accordingly.
Port wine and cultural attractions
Estação do Pinhão is covered with more than 3,000 blue azulejos. The tiles depict scenes, landscapes and customs of the region. A guided tour of the station is followed by a tasting of three Port wines from Sandeman and Ferreira, in the Branco, Ruby and Tawny styles. Times and availability may change; check the specific visit details before making your plans.
Wineries also offer different types of visits. At Quinta do Bomfim, visitors can explore the estate and vineyards and taste wines overlooking the river. The old Bomfim winery was built in 1896. Quinta de la Rosa offers guided tours and tastings in English and Portuguese; advance booking is recommended.
Quinta da Roêda is located above Pinhão. Its visitor centre is housed in the former stables and offers a tasting of Pink, the first rosé Port wine produced in the Douro. The current offerings here may also change. The visits therefore differ not only by winery but also in their focus: vineyards and wines at Quinta do Bomfim, tours in English or Portuguese at Quinta de la Rosa, and Pink at the visitor centre of Quinta da Roêda.
Railway, river and outdoor activities
The Comboio Histórico do Douro runs between Régua and Tua in 2026, stopping in Pinhão. At the stop, passengers can meet local producers and sample and buy regional products. If you are planning to include this train journey in your trip, check the timetable; later seasons require separate confirmation.
The “Cruzeiro no Douro – Pinhão / Tua / Pinhão” is a trip aboard a Rabelo boat. It starts in Pinhão and travels as far as Foz do Tua. Operating days may change, so it is helpful to check the dates before planning. Cais do Pinhão is named as a departure point for water sports and boat trips.
In 2024, trips aboard a 100% electric Rabelo boat from the banks of Pinhão through the Douro Valley were described for Magnífico Douro. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, electric bike trips and other tailor-made experiences were also mentioned. Availability may change, so ask about current options in advance.
If you are interested in a hike: the circular route “Trilho do Pinhão - Casal de Loivos”, described in a 2024 tourism article, starts and ends in Pinhão. It offers a different way to plan your trip from train and boat journeys that depend on dates. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore first decide which activity will be the deciding factor, then check the relevant visit or operating dates.
