Favaios combines historic village architecture with the history of Moscatel and the local “four-corner” wheat bread. A museum, archaeological remains and a circular walking route complement the themes of wine, bread and architecture. This lets you choose different focuses for your trip: local history, regional products or a longer walk.

Historic Centre and Architecture

Largo da Praça and Rua Direita make up the historic centre of Favaios. At Largo da Praça, an architecturally notable ensemble of regional interest defines the square; most of its buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Casa Lopo Vaz Moutinho comprises two building sections from different periods: one may date from the 17th century, while the other is a later Baroque section.

Casa de Santo António is considered one of the most interesting examples of a manor house in the Douro region. Typologically, it lies between an elegant scholar’s house and a residential and agricultural complex. This classification combines a representational residential character with the agricultural association of this building type.

Religious architecture also displays a variety of architectural features. The Chapel of Senhor Jesus do Outeiro is a 19th-century landmark in the Neo-Baroque Revival style and defines the village centre. Igreja Matriz de Favaios, also known as Igreja de São Domingos, is Neoclassical in design. It comprises a single-nave church with a chancel, as well as an adjoining bell tower and sacristy. Quinta de São Jorge, meanwhile, features a walled garden, a small Romanesque church and a Roman funerary stele, offering a variety of historical evidence.

Moscatel and “Four-Corner” Bread

The Favaios, Bread and Wine Museum interprets the history of Moscatel wine and Favaios bread. It also explores the associated traditions and production processes. Moscatel de Favaios has been produced in Favaios since the 18th century, making the wine’s history one of the village’s longstanding cultural themes.

Adega Cooperativa de Favaios offers tours of its winery and cellars, followed by a wine tasting. Tastings of Moscatel paired with specially selected cheeses are also available. As booking conditions may change, check the current terms in advance. Another stop on the history of wine is Quinta da Avessada: it was the first winery in the region to plant the Moscatel Galego grape variety.

The local bread includes “four-corner” wheat bread. Traditional bakeries in Favaios make it in wood-fired ovens and offer visitors a tasting. Together with the museum’s focus on bread and wine, this provides a distinct perspective on local products, how they are made and the traditions associated with them.

Archaeology, Culture and Walking

Castro Vilarelho is located at a high point in Favaios and is considered the largest site of its kind in the municipality of Alijó. Sections of the original defensive system remain. The settlement is thought to date from the castrejo period through to the Middle Ages. The surviving defensive sections and the cautiously estimated span of settlement offer two different starting points for exploring the site’s history.

Theatre is also part of the local cultural history. António Augusto Assunção Theatre was founded in 1919 and has space for 400 spectators. Since 2006, OFITEFA – Oficina Teatro de Favaios has promoted theatre. Birds of prey such as goshawks and buzzards, as well as land animals such as foxes, wild boars and white-toothed shrews, are also observed in Favaios.

If you would like to include a walk in your travel plans, the PR14 ALJ “Trilho de Favaios - Alijó” circular route starts and ends in Favaios. It is 10.5 kilometres long and takes approximately 3 hours and 25 minutes. This estimated time gives you a practical framework for planning your day without classifying the route as easy or difficult.
