When choosing Alijó for a stay, you can plan around specific hiking trails, a historic tree in the town centre and a church with historic features. The Plátano Centenário stands in the centre and is also the starting point for two routes.

Hiking trails around Alijó

The PR16 ALJ Trilho de Alijó - Castedo is a circular hiking trail. It starts and ends in Alijó, beside the Plátano Centenário. The PR15 ALJ Trilho de Alijó - Senhora da Cunha, by contrast, is linear and starts in Alijó at the Plátano. The two routes therefore share a reference point but differ in their route type.

This distinction is a useful starting point when planning a hike: on the PR16, the start and finish are the same, while the PR15 is designated as a linear trail. Check local conditions before setting out.

The circular PR14 ALJ Trilho de Favaios - Alijó also provides specific planning information: it is 10.5 km long, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 25 minutes. Together, the distance and duration provide a practical framework for planning your day.

Plátano Centenário and Igreja Matriz

The Plátano Centenário stands in the centre of Alijó. It was planted in 1856 at the behest of the Viscount of Ribeira and is classified as a Monumento Nacional de Interesse Público. Its location, the year it was planted and its official protection classification offer different ways to understand the tree as a historic landmark in the town.

The Igreja Matriz de Alijó was built in honour of Santa Maria Maior and dates from the late 18th century. Inside, it houses a sculpture of Santa Maria Maior made from Ançã stone, as well as chalices from the 16th century. The church brings together a dedication and a construction date from the late 18th century, alongside furnishings with their own historical associations. The chalices come from an earlier period than the church building.

Those interested in local history can consider the tree and the church as two distinct subjects: the Plátano is notable for its planting year and protected status, while the church is notable for its dedication, date of origin and furnishings. This means you can plan a stay around Alijó’s historical landmarks as well as its hiking trails.
