Barroselas: Mills Trail and Heritage
Accommodation in Barroselas
For a trip to Barroselas, signposted short-distance walking trails and cultural sites connected with water and religious history provide practical guidance. The PR11 Trilho da Vila de Barroselas and the PR12 Trilho das Azenhas are marked and signposted and are part of the municipal walking trail network of Viana do Castelo. The PR12 has a specific connection to mills and the Rio Neiva; the PR11 is another short-distance trail in this network.
Walking along the Rio Neiva
The Trilho das Azenhas leads to the lush banks of the Rio Neiva. Various mill structures and mills are part of the river’s cultural and ethnographic heritage. Engenho da Lage is considered the first mill stop along the route. Other mill sites along the trail include Azenha da Caneira and Azenhas do Mouro; the final mill stop is Azenha das Pesqueiras. Towards the end, the trail passes the Seminário dos Missionários Passionistas.
The water technology can be understood through a two-wheel “estanca rios” mill structure. It was used to draw and extract water from the river; the water was then used for irrigation and other purposes. The mills along the trail once served users from the areas of Vale do Neiva. Thus, the Trilho das Azenhas is not only about the riverside landscape: the former use of water and the mills as part of the cultural heritage also shape the trail’s theme.
Bridges, mills and religious history
The Ponte romana de Barroselas stands over the Ribeiro dos Reis Magos at Lugar das Alvas. Its name reflects the traditional attribution of the bridge to Roman times; however, it was built in the Middle Ages. The name and the historical period of construction therefore tell two different aspects of its history.
The Capela do EspĂrito Santo is also connected with water: it is located near the Rio Neiva and beside a disused watermill. Those interested in the religious history of the area will also find connections to the Passionists. The Seminário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima dos Missionários Passionistas is located in the Freguesia SĂŁo Pedro de Barroselas in the Concelho Viana do Castelo. Its historical purpose was to spread the Passion of Christ through words and deeds. The associated canonical association was founded on 8 February 1954.
Passionist traditions in a shared cultural space
The Festa da FamĂlia Passionista is a long-standing tradition; in Barroselas, it was celebrated on 14 July 2024. The date refers to a specific past event. It is therefore a historical reference, not information about an upcoming date.
Lugar das Neves is a shared cultural site of the Freguesias of Barroselas, MujĂŁes and Vila de Punhe. Nossa Senhora das Neves is venerated there annually on 5 August. The Auto da Floripes is also performed there every year, invoking the figure of Nossa Senhora das Neves. These traditions complement the history of the mills and buildings with their own festive and religious focus.
