Santo Tirso lies on the Rio Ave. Monastic and textile history, classified cultural sites and nature-related attractions give the destination several points of interest. Its historical connections range from a monastery founded in the 10th century to the textile industrialisation of the Vale do Ave. There is also a hiking trail, a place described as a natural viewpoint and the municipal bike-sharing system PEDALA. When planning your trip, you can focus on the subjects that interest you most.

Monastic history and cultural heritage

The Mosteiro de Santo Tirso was founded in 978 by D.ª Unisco Godiniz. The Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa is housed in the former guesthouse of the Mosteiro. The MMAP is intended to serve as a reception and interpretation centre for visitors to the building and its associated area.

The complex of the Mosteiro de São Bento in Santo Tirso is also classified as a National Monument. The classification covers the church, monastery, enclosure and processional cross. The former Mosteiro de Vilarinho was founded in the 11th century by the Canons Regular of the Holy Cross. The Igreja de São Miguel de Vilarinho is classified as Portuguese Cultural Heritage of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público).

Other classified sites are located in various named parishes: Castro de Santa Margarida in S. Tomé de Negrelos and Serra Hidráulica de Pereiras in Monte Córdova are classified as Imóveis de Interesse Público. Capela de Santa Cruz in Burgães is classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público. Casa e Quinta de Dinis de Cima in Santa Cristina do Couto is also classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. These different designations give you a concrete overview of the diversity of the cultural heritage.

Textile history and museums

Fábrica de Fiação e Tecidos de Santo Thyrso lies on the left bank of the Rio Ave, near Santo Tirso city centre. The permanent exhibition at Fábrica de Santo Thyrso presents the company’s history and its connection to the textile industrialisation of the Vale do Ave. Sala da Máquina marks the beginning of a route through the most representative areas of the industrial complex.

Quadro D. Manuel II is considered evidence of the importance and economic strength of Fábrica de Fiação e Tecidos de Santo Thyrso on the eve of the Republic. MIECST offers a different focus for its collection: it currently comprises 54 sculptures, organised into six main sections. As collection figures can change, it is worth checking the latest information when planning your visit.

Landscape and outdoor activities

PR3 reaches the source of the Rio Leça and follows a stretch with rich and varied flora and fauna. Alto de Cabanas is considered a natural viewpoint. Together, these two attractions offer a different perspective from the monastic and industrial history: here, the focus is on the route and the landscape.

The PEDALA bike-sharing system can be used throughout the municipality of Santo Tirso. The service is scheduled to operate every day, year-round, from 07:00 to 23:00. In adverse weather or for technical reasons, the municipality may extend, reduce or suspend the service. PEDALA bikes can be used at stations with a debit or credit card and without prior registration; payment arrangements may be updated. If you plan to use PEDALA, check the current service and payment arrangements in advance.

July traditions and regional connections

The municipality’s largest pilgrimage in honour of Saint Benedict takes place in July. This makes the month a useful point of reference if you would also like to explore Santo Tirso through its religious traditions.

The Caldas da Saúde thermal baths are located near Santo Tirso. They also feature an exhibition of instruments used in treatments at the beginning of the 20th century. Pastéis Jesuítas, a traditional Portuguese pastry, are associated with Santo Tirso. Along with the museums, heritage sites and nature-related attractions, these regional connections add to the picture of the destination.
