Discover Santo Tirso
Accommodation in Santo Tirso
Santo Tirso offers a range of activities for a stay: medieval architecture, archaeological collections, art and textile industrial history, as well as public green spaces and markets. If youâre looking for a hotel in Santo Tirso, first consider whether youâd like to focus mainly on museums and architectural history, art and industrial heritage, or time outdoors.
Monastery, architecture and collections
The Mosteiro de SĂŁo Bento, also known as Mosteiro de Santo Tirso, preserves a 13th-century Gothic cloister. Its features include pointed-arch arcades and elaborately decorated capitals. These details give the building a distinct architectural focus: the shape of the arches and the design of the capitals each tell their own story about the cloisterâs decoration.
The Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa is housed in the former hostel of the Mosteiro de Santo Tirso. The hostel was built between 1737 and 1740. The museumâs redesign, inaugurated in 2016, was created by architects Ălvaro Siza Viera and Eduardo Souto de Moura. The site thus brings together the history of the building and a much later architectural design.
The Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa also displays archaeological objects from various sites in the region. They span the period from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The museum therefore offers a broad overview of different eras; the collection can be seen as a complement to the architectural history of the former hostel building.
Contemporary sculpture is another of Santo Tirsoâs art themes. The MIEC offers visitors a self-guided, free visit within the city. MIECST currently has 54 sculptures arranged across six main areas. The number and layout give an overview of the scope of this sculpture display.
Textile industrial history and art
FĂĄbrica de Santo Thyrso was founded in 1896. Its company history and connection to the textile industrialisation of the Vale do Ave are presented in the permanent exhibition at the Centro Interpretativo da FĂĄbrica de Santo Thyrso. Sala da MĂĄquina marks the start of a route through the factoryâs most representative areas. Anyone interested in the companyâs development will find an introduction to the industrial side of the cityâs history here.
The Centro de Arte Alberto Carneiro has a different collection focus. The collection, donated by Alberto Carneiro to the MunicĂpio de Santo Tirso in 2015, comprises fifty drawings and ten sculptures. The centre began its activities with a first exhibition of this permanent collection. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and offers educational activities. Together, the collection, temporary exhibitions and educational offerings provide different insights into the sculptorâs work and the centreâs programme.
Green spaces and trails
Parque Urbano Sara Moreira is a 96,274 mÂČ public green space in an oak and cork oak forest above the Rio Ave. Facilities include walking paths, picnic areas, places to relax, an amphitheatre and a lake. The park thus combines paths and places to spend time with other amenities.
A cycle path along the Ave connects Parque Urbano Sara Moreira with Santo Tirso city centre. For a longer outing, there is the PR8 STS: the 10.6-kilometre circular walking trail starts and ends at Praça 25 de Abril. It passes through Santo Tirso and Burgães, as well as several urban parks and quinta estates in the Concelho Santo Tirso. Its length and circular route can help you plan your time; check trail conditions before setting out.
Markets on the second Saturday
The municipal listing, updated in July 2026, features two regular markets scheduled for the second Saturday of each month. For Bazar DâArtes & OfĂcios, the listing gives the hours as 09:00 to 17:00 and the location as Praça Camilo Castelo Branco. For Feira de Antiguidades, it lists the hours as 09:00 to 16:00 and the location as Parque Dona Maria II. The two time slots overlap; the Bazar runs one hour longer. If you plan to visit either market, check the date before you go.
