Porto: History, Architecture and Routes by the Water
Accommodation in Porto
Porto’s historic centre lies on hills overlooking the mouth of the Douro. The city also offers striking buildings, museums and wine-related experiences; green spaces, a beach and waterside routes add to the choices. If you’re looking for a hotel in Porto, first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: history and architecture, art and wine, or landscapes and the sea.
History and architecture
The historic centre is part of the World Heritage site “Historic Centre of Oporto, Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar”. The entire site is considered an outstanding urban landscape with a 2,000-year history. Praça da Liberdade commemorates the victorious Liberal Revolution of 1820.
The buildings offer a range of architectural styles. The Livraria Lello building is one of the most striking examples of the Neo-Gothic style. The Baroque Torre dos Clérigos is 75 metres high, can be reached via 225 steps and offers panoramic views of central Porto. Igreja do Carmo was built in the 18th century; a hand-painted tile panel covers its exterior façade. The hand-painted tiled façade of Capela das Almas also dates from the 18th century. It depicts scenes from the lives of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine. The 19th-century, hexagonal Farolim de Felgueiras stands at the mouth of the Douro.
Museums, art and wine
The Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis has its origins in a museum for paintings, prints and other art objects founded by D. Pedro IV of Portugal, the first Emperor of Brazil. Casa São Roque combines 18th-century architecture with a contemporary art centre and a maze-like garden. At the Museu do Carro Elétrico, you can experience 19th-century trams and views of the river in a historic, immersive setting. World of Discoveries offers a historical experience related to Portugal’s Age of Discovery; SEA LIFE Porto has an underwater tunnel.
Wine is also explored in different ways. Centro Interpretativo Porto & Douro presents the wines of Porto and the Douro, along with their growing regions, in an interactive multimedia journey that begins in the vineyard and ends in the glass. EssĂŞncia do Vinho features wine tastings and a programme of masterclasses; specific programme details may change. You can therefore choose between an informative journey through wine and its growing regions, or tastings and masterclasses as standalone themes.
Green spaces, beach and waterside routes
Jardim Botânico do Porto has historic trees, plants from around the world and woodland paths. Parque da Cidade covers 83 hectares; its landscaped areas stretch all the way to the sea. Praia do Homem do Leme is a Porto beach a short distance from the city centre. The botanical garden, park and beach thus bring different landscape themes into your travel plans.
Getting around can also play a role in your planning. Porto’s public transport network includes buses, the metro, trams, a funicular and trains. A cycle path runs along the river and seafront promenade from Ponte LuĂs I to Matosinhos. As transport services and cycling infrastructure may change due to construction or redevelopment, check current connections and route details before travelling.
