Matosinhos lies at the mouth of the Leça River and originated as a traditional fishing settlement where salt was produced. The coast, fishing and the town’s history meet here alongside remarkable buildings and museums. Visitors planning a stay can explore these different sides of the destination according to their own interests.

Coast, Water and Architecture

Water sports such as surfing and windsurfing are practised at Praia de Matosinhos. Internationally, the beach is considered one of the best for learning to surf. Another architectural destination by the water is Piscina das Marés: the saltwater pool is integrated into the surrounding landscape. Álvaro Siza Vieira designed the complex, which was built between 1961 and 1966.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova is also an important work by Álvaro Siza Vieira. It was built between 1958 and 1963 and offers views of the sea. Farol da Boa Nova was built in 1927; at 46 metres, it is one of Portugal’s tallest lighthouses. These structures make distinct impressions: a pool integrated into the landscape, architecture with sea views, and a striking lighthouse.

Praia da Senhora is a small, sheltered beach surrounded by rocks. There is a car park there; check local conditions before setting off. At Angeiras Beach are Roman fish-salting tanks dating from the 2nd to 4th centuries, which are classified as a National Monument. They reflect a long history of using the sea, a theme also explored in the area’s museums.

History and Notable Buildings

Santuårio do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos is considered the most important building in the city of Matosinhos. It houses an image of Bom Jesus that came from the now-vanished Mosteiro de Bouças in the 16th century. The church acquired its present-day Baroque appearance through a reconstruction designed by Nicolau Nasoni in 1732. In May or June, the sanctuary is the focal point of a pilgrimage in honour of Senhor de Matosinhos.

Other buildings tell stories of different purposes and eras. The LeixÔes Cruise Terminal was inaugurated in 2015 and designed by Luís Pedro Silva. Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves de Leça was built to strengthen the defences of the mouth of the Douro. The sculpture She Changes by American artist Janet Echelman was inaugurated in 2005.

Museums and Insights into the Town

In Matosinhos, architecture is also connected to cultural offerings. Casa da Arquitectura is housed in the Real VinĂcola building and opened to the public in 2017. It focuses on architecture and offers exhibitions, talks, courses, guided visits and workshops. The combination of a historic building and an architectural focus makes it a distinctive stop for visitors interested in culture.

Museu da Quinta de Santiago tells the story of social and urban changes in the Matosinhos region from the late 19th century into the 20th century. The historic museum building was probably completed in 1896. Sculptures by Siza Vieira, Rui Anahory and Lagoa Henriques stand in the garden. Guided tours of the museum and its exhibitions are available by prior arrangement.

Casa do Mar e Tanques Romanos, a museum dedicated to artisanal fishing, is housed in a former fisher’s cottage on Angeiras Beach. It is advisable to arrange a visit in advance. Workshops in granite working are offered using replicas of the Roman tanks; participation must be arranged at least eight days in advance. The archaeological tanks and artisanal fishing offer two distinct ways to explore the history of this coastal town.

Museu da Memória de Matosinhos offers a virtual journey through 15 emblematic places in Matosinhos using a 360-degree headset. Visitors can also record their own video testimonial, which is added to the museum’s collection. For travellers who want an overview of places and memories, this offers a different approach from the architecture and history exhibitions.

Travel Planning Tips

Food and transport may also factor into your plans. Matosinhos has a high concentration of restaurants and seafood restaurants near the fishing harbour and fish auction hall. From CĂąmara de Matosinhos metro station, it is a six-minute walk, or 400 metres, to the Museu de Conservas Pinhais. Check current metro operating details before your trip.

Use the places you have selected as a guide when assessing the specific location of a hotel for your stay. This keeps your choice of accommodation aligned with your travel plans without assuming that all the sights are part of the same itinerary.
