The Douro, Parque Botânico do Castelo and the area’s industrial history give Crestuma its distinctive character. The range extends from a unique plant species and diverse wildlife to dam construction and former textile production. The river landscape, nature and local history offer different perspectives on your stay.

Cais de Crestuma is one of the shipping terminals on the Douro and is located at river kilometre 21. Its operational use may vary.

Nature at Parque Botânico do Castelo

Omphalodes nitida, a plant endemic to northern Portugal, grows in Parque Botânico do Castelo in Crestuma. The wildlife is also diverse, including numerous insects, several reptile species and, above all, songbirds. The park brings together different aspects of nature, from a plant species distinctive to the region to birds and other groups of animals.

The municipal park was created by restoring a derelict estate. Several excavations led by archaeologists have also taken place in the park.

The Douro and water engineering

Barragem de Crestuma / Lever is a movable dam with nine piers and eight spillway gates. The facility includes a ship lock on the left bank of the Douro. The dam lies downstream on the Douro, at the eastern edge of the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, and its reservoir extends for about 44 kilometres. This water engineering project encompasses both specific technical structures and an extensive reservoir.

A trip along the Douro can also include the dam: on the Porto–Pinhão–Porto route, the Barragem de Crestuma-Lever is passed at a height difference of 14 metres.

Traces of industrial history

Companhia de Fiação de Crestuma was founded in 1854 and officially established in 1857. The former complex included the owner’s house, administrative buildings, workers’ accommodation and old machinery. The factory stood beside a deeply cut section of the Rio Uíma and was powered by hydraulic engines. The site, water and industrial production are part of a specific local history.

Other industries also shaped Crestuma: by the end of the 19th century, there were at least four iron foundries there. Fábrica de Fitas e Fiação de Algodão AC Cunha Moraes was founded in 1890. After the factory was established in Crestuma, the Morais family settled at Quinta da Estrela in Crestuma. The private quays of Companhia de Fiação de Crestuma and A.C. Cunha Morais still exist today.

Tradition and canoeing

São Pedro is associated with a nighttime tradition in Crestuma: flowerpots and other objects are “stolen” and displayed on the steps of Igreja de Santa Marinha. The ritual links courtyards with a named place in the village and gives the celebration a distinctive local form.

The Douro’s sporting connections include Clube Náutico de Crestuma, considered one of the leading centres of Portuguese canoeing. Alongside water engineering and the area’s industrial heritage, this adds to the town’s nature and culture themes.
