Crestuma: Archaeology, Industrial History and Canoeing
Accommodation in Crestuma
For a trip to Crestuma, archaeological finds, industrial history and canoeing offer different points of interest. If you are interested in the history of the place, the subjects range from finds at Castelo de Crestuma to former industrial businesses and the milling industry. Other points of interest include the Douro, the visitor trail in Parque Botânico do Castelo and the year-round canoeing programme offered by Clube Náutico de Crestuma. Plan your stay according to whether you want to focus on archaeological traces, industrial history, river history or a specific sports session.
Archaeology and Park
Several walls dating from the 4th to the 6th century were discovered during excavations at Castelo de Crestuma. A tomb carved into the rock was also uncovered; it is believed to date from the 10th or 11th century. The walls and the tomb therefore point to distinctly different periods; the tomb’s date remains an estimate.
Parque Botânico do Castelo opened on 13 September 2009. The visitor trail has benches; picnic tables are available only in some sections, so you should not assume there will be a table along the entire trail when planning your breaks.
Industrial History and Repurposing
Crestuma’s industrial history includes iron and cotton processing as well as the former milling industry. The Fábrica de Verguinha e Arcos de Ferro de Crestuma, founded in 1790, is considered an early iron-industry business. A century later, in 1890, the Fábrica de Fitas e Fiação de Algodão AC Cunha Morais was founded; it developed into one of Crestuma’s largest industrial businesses. It received a gold medal at the Exposição Agrícola-Industrial de Gaya in 1894.
The building of the former iron foundry of Rufino José dos Santos stands on the Douro, immediately to the left of the exit from Parque Botânico do Castelo, and was converted into the nautical centre of Clube Náutico de Crestuma. Many mill ruins and associated water channels have also been preserved in Crestuma, bearing witness to the historic milling industry. The Sociedade de Fundição e Metalurgia, known as SOFUME, is a ruin.
The Douro and Canoeing
Praia Fluvial de Crestuma lies on the left bank of the Douro. Crestuma / Lever Dam is upstream on the Douro, at the far eastern edge of the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. In the past, Crestuma was a mandatory stop for Rabelo boats; on Sundays, the town was visited by people on excursions from Porto in barges and motorboats.
Clube Náutico de Crestuma offers canoeing year-round, including training sessions at weekends. Since training times may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule in advance if you want to plan your trip around a particular session. The club has also held the Maratona Internacional de Crestuma annually since its foundation.
Shad and Food Culture
Preparing shad is one of Crestuma’s long-standing culinary traditions. At the same time, the fish species faces ecological risks. If you are interested in regional food culture, this connection offers another perspective on the place.
