Gondomar between the Douro, filigree and mining history
Accommodation in Gondomar
Gondomar combines the Douro with a rich history of craftsmanship and industry. The river is part of the area’s natural heritage and one of its main attractions for nature, nautical and bathing tourism. Gondomar is also part of the regionally protected landscape of Parque das Serras do Porto. Experiences by the water sit alongside filigree art, mining history and historic buildings, offering different focal points for planning your trip.
The Douro and bathing areas
On the right bank of the Douro, the Areal de Zebreiros lies in a rural setting. This recreational area includes an extensive sandy beach and showers. Lifeguards are on duty there during the bathing season, and bathing water quality is regularly monitored. The Areal de Melres is also on the right bank and offers a large sandy beach, as well as a first-aid station, toilets and a bar.
Praia da Lomba also has an extensive sandy beach, a first-aid station, toilets and a bar. Its water sports centre offers kayak and SUP rentals, rides on a buoy towed by a motorboat, wakeboarding and motorboat trips. Visitors to the Douro in Gondomar can also enjoy boat trips, jet skiing, motorboating, sailing, canoeing and rowing. The Marina de Covelo is equipped to accommodate boats. A water taxi service operates from the Marina de Melres; the crossing takes about ten minutes.
Filigree art and cultural heritage
Casa Branca de Gramido was built in the 18th century; the Convention of Gramido was signed there in June 1847. Today, the building houses the Loja Interativa de Turismo and serves as a cultural venue. It is also home to the Museu Municipal da Filigrana de Gondomar. Since 2016, it has hosted a permanent exhibition on filigree art.
The Rota da Filigrana offers insights into traditional filigree workshops. Groups can visit them by prior arrangement and take part in a workshop. Guided by a master goldsmith, participants learn and try traditional techniques in practice. As participation requirements may change, it is best to arrange your visit in advance.
The Museu Mineiro de São Pedro da Cova was established in 1989 in a former building of the Casas da Malta. It is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and revitalising the geological and mining heritage of São Pedro da Cova. The former mining area, Antigo Couto Mineiro de São Pedro da Cova, is described as a monument to labour—another distinctive feature alongside Gondomar’s filigree art and historic buildings.
Another example of civil architecture is the 16th-century Solar da Bandeirinha. Its Salão Nobre features 17th-century Baroque woodcarvings and can be visited by prior appointment. Multiusos de Gondomar showcases another side of the cultural offer: designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, the building hosts major events.
Trails and mills in Foz do Sousa
The “Linha de Midões e Moinhos de Jancido” hiking route is located in Foz do Sousa. It follows a former railway line that once carried coal from the mines to the mouth of the River Sousa. The Moinhos de Jancido, which are about 200 years old, are now the route’s main attraction. The former coal transport route now forms the basis of the hiking trail.
For a ride on two wheels, there is also the Ciclovia do Polis de Gondomar, a 2.6-kilometre cycle path. Gondomar offers a variety of routes and themes, from the former coal transport route and mills to a dedicated cycle route.
Regional cuisine and event dates
The Festival do Sável e da Lampreia is a recurring gastronomic event featuring traditional and innovative dishes. Its 32nd edition took place in 2024. The gastronomic competition “Concurso Gastronómico de Rojões e Papas de Sarrabulho de Baguim do Monte” is held every February in Baguim do Monte. Caldo de Nabos is associated with an annual gastronomic festival held during Gondomar’s parish festivals between September and October. The local sweet “Coração de Gondomar” is inspired by regional products such as walnuts, turnips and honey.
