Vermelha brings together the church in the village centre, Fernanda Botelho’s literary heritage and the wine culture of Adega da Vermelha. A leisure area in the village and the Trilho do Vinho da Vermelha add to these cultural and agricultural connections.

Church and literary heritage

The Igreja do Divino EspĂrito Santo stands in the centre of Vermelha and features 17th-century azulejo tilework, including the tiling of the main chapel. The tiles give the church a distinct art-historical dimension and draw attention to a specific detail of its decoration.

The Casa Museu Fernanda Botelho preserves the writer’s literary heritage, as well as her personal and cultural archive, in the house where she lived in Vermelha. The house museum combines the preservation of her literary work with its scholarly study and is open to the community.

One particular work is also closely linked to the place: Fernanda Botelho wrote the entire novel “As Contadoras de Histórias” in Vermelha. Her home, archive and literary work are thus connected in a tangible way.

The Casa Museu has also developed cultural outreach activities with the network of school libraries, municipal libraries and school associations in the Oeste region and neighbouring municipalities. The collaboration therefore extends beyond Vermelha and involves a range of regional educational partners.

Wine as a reason to visit

At Adega da Vermelha, visitors can learn about its history, facilities and production processes. The guided tour ends in the shop with a tasting of four wines. The visit therefore includes both an introduction to the winery and a tasting at the end of the tour.

The Adega da Vermelha (AV) brand is recognised and award-winning nationally and internationally. The Adega also produces the “Mundus” brand in the Vinhos Leves category. These details highlight different aspects: the brand’s recognition on the one hand, and its connection to this wine category on the other.

Leisure area and agricultural surroundings

Parque dos Polomes is in the village of Vermelha and complements its cultural points of interest with a local leisure area. The Trilho do Vinho da Vermelha starts and ends next to the Vermelha parish council offices. Around the village, the route passes through cultivated fields where vines are the main crop. The two ways of exploring the subject of wine have different emphases: the trail focuses on viticulture in its agricultural surroundings, while the tour at Adega da Vermelha introduces visitors to its history, facilities and production processes and ends with a tasting of four wines.

At parish level, Vermelha is surrounded by extensive floodplains, hills and valleys. This landscape is part of the area’s broader character and complements the agricultural setting of the trail.
